Lamblion Holiday Apartment Antigua and Barbuda: A Voyage of Sustainability in the Caribbean

Lamblion Holiday Apartment is located in the heart of the beautiful twin-island state, Antigua and Barbuda and has recently been awarded its inaugural Green Globe certification, achieving an impressive 81% of all criteria

Lionel and Lorilyn Walker (nee Lambert), are Lamblion Holiday Apartment’s management team and welcome this prestigious sustainability award for their family-owned property. For the Walkers the journey of sustainability has been a fulfilling one and they encourage all small accommodations to continue to look for small ways to make improvements to their environmental program as the long-term benefits are many.

“We’re committed to a continuous improvement model in sustainability management practices, and are constantly improving our ecological and social performance by liaising with the local community to raise environmental awareness to reduce carbon emissions,” states Lionel Walker

Nestled between the two historic villages of Sea View Farm and Freemans Village, Lamblion Holiday Apartment is just 15-20 minutes from beaches and all places of interest on this famous Caribbean Island.

Waste management is a key part of protecting Lamblion Apartments and Antigua and Barbuda’s natural beauty. Composting is one of the ways in which waste material is returned to the earth. It is a process of creating a mixture to improve soil’s physical, chemical and biological properties, and commonly prepared by combining decomposing plants waste, recycled organic materials and manure. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, such as bacteria, protozoa, nematodes and fungi.

Lionel Walker says, “We are respectful of the environment and acknowledge the need not only to reduce our negative impact, but to increase our positive impact on the surrounding environment. The less waste we can send to the landfill, the better it is for our planet.”

Walker further explains, “Lamblion guests place their peelings etc. from fruits and vegetables in a marked metal container that is emptied daily into a Compost Tumbler bin which has a capacity of 45 gallons. After 3 months the decomposition of the waste material is complete, and the soil is now ready to be used in the garden.”

The Lamblion Holiday Apartment has lowered its overall water usage via the installation of a grey water system. This system allows for significant reduction in overall water consumption as the grey water is used for the flower garden and some fruit trees.

Lionel and Lorilyn are passionate gardeners and propagate over 100 different plants in their tropical garden. Besides being an oasis of tranquility, the garden plays a big role in the Lamblion kitchens, with guests free to pick fresh vegetables and herbs and use in their favorite dishes, or snack on local fruits in season.

Visitors to the Lamblion Apartment come from all over the globe including various parts of Europe such as Germany as well as the United Kingdom, Canada and the USA, and are always curious about the extensive variety of produce. Food crops include, corn, cassava, sorrel, ochros, and sweet potato; along with fruit trees such as the Soursop, Mangoes, Sugar Apple, Pomegranate. The herb garden produces parsley, celery, onions, sweet pepper, seasoning pepper, and basil. While flowering plants such as the Bougainvilleas, Bridal Bouquet and Powder Puff bring brilliant color.

The Walkers believe that sustainability is important to the future of the nation’s children. To this end they have committed to support the Sea View Farm Primary School, to transfer sustainability to young minds. Workshops have been planned and held on significant days such as Earth Day and World Environmental Day. The workshops aim to promote learning around the negative impact the students’ actions may have on the environment and to develop and reinforce actions to care for, and understand how to protect the planet.

The educational sessions are delivered by Lorilyn Walker herself and they are done with various themes in mind. One of the most memorable sessions within recent times was Earth Day 2022 where the students engaged in discussions on what the environment is as well as how they could play a part in its protection. The sessions include the distribution of handouts and lively discussions engaging the youngsters on ways in which they can help the environment such as not littering.

Renewable energy has remained an important consideration for Lionlamb Apartment. In 2014 solar water heaters were fitted, and in 2018, Lamblion installed a total of 36 Grid-Tied solar panels contributing a total of 10 KW. The solar panels supply the day-time electricity needed for operations. The excess electricity produced is sent to the National Grid. Most recently inverter units have been installed throughout the apartment complex as well as LED lights on the entire property. All these projects were made possible by grant funding through the Caribbean Export and the European Union through Direct Assistance Grant Scheme.
