Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South: Sustainability Starts in the Neighborhood

Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South recognizes that, “We are part of the world and part of a local community.” For the hotel it makes real sense that they have an influence in the world through the contributions they make in their neighborhood.

Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South places great emphasis on consuming local and keeping an eye out for ways to reduce consumption and consume smarter. And at the same time, they are part of a local community, supporting local initiatives and small businesses who wish to make a difference in the world.

Hotel staff are on the ground regularly organizing clean-ups of their neighborhood, on the South side of the city, ensuring local streets are free of trash. Food waste from the hotel’s operations is also collected and donated to local farmers so they can feed their animals.

When it comes to local projects, Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South is a rallying point for organizing support. No project is too small and in May this year, the hotel team hosted and helped with the planting of water lilies in the nearby canal.

Local businesses also feel the warmth of the hotel’s community spirit. For welcome amenities, Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South collaborates with Personality. This unique sock company is located at the end of the street and specializes in socks with sustainability. The hotel also adds locally produced “drop” (licorice) to their welcome amenities, which is purchased from Droomdrop. Every Thursday at the little food market in front of the hotel, Droomdrop sells its variety of licorice in handmade bags, as well as dropping off the hotel’s delivery.

At the global level, Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South is launching a collaboration with non-profit charity, Hotel for Trees. This climate action organization, plants trees in various areas around the world when guests agree not to have their room serviced during their stays. The hotel’s restaurant has also partnered with Elephant Parade®. This social enterprise runs the world’s largest art exhibition of decorated elephant statues to raise awareness for elephant conservation.
