A Haven of Unique Experiences: Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, the Dream Destination for 2023

Sardón de Duero, February 2023. It’s the much-anticipated reopening: on 24th February, the Hotel Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine will open its doors once more. This resort, at the heart of the Duero Valley (Valladolid) and less than two hours from Madrid, has plenty of new things to offer guests this season, particularly related to gastronomy and wellbeing. It’s the perfect excuse to visit this dreamlike destination in 2023.

A complete resort
Abadía Retuerta is set in breathtaking surroundings. Its exquisite decoration is in perfect harmony with the rich history of the abbey building, which dates back to the 12th century. The estate’s impressive collection of classical and contemporary art, along with all the expertise of the devoted team, is what makes this such a special destination, right on the banks of the river Duero.

The hotel itself has 30 sophisticated rooms — 27 classic rooms and three suites — which provide guests with a refined and utterly peaceful atmosphere. At Abadía Retuerta, time stands still, and joy is in the air. As CEO Enrique Valero puts it: “Our philosophy is all about safeguarding our heritage, the legacy that has been passed down from our predecessors, the Premonstratensian monks. Ultimately, our aim is to offer guests an all-round superb experience. Abadía Retuerta is not just a hotel or winery — it is a complete resort, in its own right. We carefully manage the time and happiness of those who put their trust in us, so we consider ourselves “directors of joy”. We are now looking forward to the new season, so our guests can keep enjoying those memorable moments with us.”

Vinoteca: a redesign and a new menu
Among the new things at Abadía Retuerta this year, the restaurant Vinoteca has renovated both its dining area and its gastronomic offering. The new look is warmer and cosier, while retaining the contemporary Spanish-tavern style that so defines it, in a setting where wine is the life and soul. Vinoteca now has an updated range of lighter furniture, which combines stone material with walnut wood, natural leather and new fabrics such as linen and velvet. There are also new lighting and decorative elements, to create an even more enticing environment for diners.

As part of this overhaul, the bar area now plays an even more central role: it is the perfect spot for lunch or dinner. Furthermore, the restaurant’s menu has been updated, to offer gourmet tasting menus based on local produce from the surrounding terroir. This includes ingredients grown in the Monks’ Vegetable Garden, the recently revived on-site allotment which serves as a pantry for the estate’s restaurants. The Garden provides the kitchens with over 150 different plant and vegetable products, and Vinoteca pairs the resulting dishes with a constantly-changing selection of wines and other drinks.

Meanwhile, Refectorio — Abadía Retuerta’s flagship restaurant, which holds a Michelin Star and Green Star, as well as two Repsol Suns — is once again ready to surprise its guests with stunning new menus. They are defined by outstanding local and seasonal ingredients, many of which are grown on site.

Excellence and wellbeing
Self-care and relaxation are everything at Santuario Wellness & Spa. It is located underground, in the former stables area, with several light sources that guarantee 80% natural light. It has its own bold architectural style, while still respecting the resort’s overall aesthetic, and it features pieces by George Nakashima and Swiss sculptor Hans Josephsohn. This large space — spanning over 1000m2 — is a place where guests can feel looked after, where they can switch off from their day-to-day lives and choose from a wide range of specially designed treatments. Santuario takes a holistic approach to wellbeing which includes, among others, therapies of meditation, yoga and sound healing with Tibetan Singing Bowls. The latest addition to its repertoire is Abadía Retuerta Senses by Clinique La Prairie, an exclusive programme only available at LeDomaine (the first hotel in Spain to offer any such treatment by Clinique La Prairie). It consists of a one or two-night stay at the resort, a meditation session with Tibetan Singing Bowls, a bodily treatment (Cellular Detoxifying Body – Swiss Perfection), a facial treatment (Cellular Facial Intense Hydration - Swiss Perfection), and an experience in the Monks’ Vegetable Garden, which includes a nutritional assessment. In a further endorsement, Santuario Wellness & Spa was recently declared the Best Luxury Historical Spa in Europe at the 2022 World Luxury Spa Awards.

Art and sustainable wine tourism
Abadía Retuerta is also known for its superb art, nature and wine. This drive for excellence has been proven recently, particularly with the estate’s new Protected Designation of Origin, which was granted in late 2022 by the European Union: their seal of approval endorses Abadía Retuerta’s wine as a product of guaranteed origin, quality and tradition. The site was also named in the World’s Best Vineyards 2022, reaching number 29 on this list of the greatest resorts for wine tourism.

And there are two further reasons to visit Abadía Retuerta. Guests can go on a fabulous guided art experience, to see and learn all about the estate’s classical and contemporary art collection. Also, they can tour the vineyards and winery: they will get the chance to explore the estate, walking among the vineyards and discovering its rich history. They will get to see, up-close, the vineyards team’s environmentally friendly methods, as well as the traditional processes used to collect the grapes and make the wine. Finally, they will be able to taste the wines, the estate’s precious treasures. All of this, and much more, is the perfect excuse to plan a break at Abadía Retuerta this 2023.
