Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang: An Authentic Green Village

Nature is the essence of Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang – which means “green village” in Khmer. Consisting of eight acres of preserved land, the resort has been designed to respect and value the surrounding ground – most of it being paddy fields. Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang’s dedication to sustainable practices is evident in the methods employed throughout the hotel and its purpose of creating a sustainable environment. No wonder that the resort had seen its Green Globe certification renewed in April 2023.

We are delighted to bring you the latest news and updates from Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang, where we are committed to providing extraordinary experiences while prioritizing sustainability and environmental responsibility. In this edition, we would like to highlight our continued efforts in waste management, recycling programs, organic practices, and energy efficiency.

NURTURING THE EARTH’S BOUNTY AND OUR PADDIES

Waste management is a crucial environmental issue, and at Zannier Hotels, we are committed to minimizing our impact. One of our key initiatives is composting. We collect yard waste, such as leaves, vegetable and flower plant parts, and straw, which are then skillfully transformed into nutrient-rich compost. This compost nourishes our paddies, ensuring the fertility of our fields without the use of toxic pesticides. Additionally, our organic vegetable garden, plants, and fruit trees benefit from this sustainable approach, contributing to the overall well-being of our resort.

CULTIVATING SUSTAINABILITY

 At Zannier Hotels, we understand the importance of organic practices for both the environment and human health. We are proud to maintain a vast portfolio of carefully selected organic and sustainable local suppliers. These partnerships not only ensure the highest quality products for our guests but also serve as sources of valuable knowledge and inspiration. To ensure the ongoing effectiveness and relevance of our supplier relationships, we maintain regular contact with them. The frequency of our contacts depends on the specific requirements of the product and the criticality of the activity. Typically, we review our relationships with them within six months to a year. Our suppliers educate us on new and improved products and operational procedures through constant collaboration, this allows us to continuously enhance our sustainability efforts.

In line with our commitment to the well-being of our guests, we have made a conscious choice to use only natural and organic products in our spa based on ginger, turmeric, anise, kefir lime, cinnamon, moringa leaf, aloe vera and lemongrass. By doing so, we prioritize the long-term health and beauty of our guests, ensuring that their skin and bodies are not exposed to hazardous substances.

Moreover, we are actively expanding our resort-grown vegetable production located near our Hang Bay restaurant to meet the sufficient requirements in our kitchen. Today we have many organic products in our resort, such as aloe era, banana leaf & pepper, mango, papaya, cucumber, eggplant, kale, chili, long bean, red oak lettuce, spring onions, tomato, bok choy, choy sum, holy & sweet basil, mint leaf, lemongrass. By providing healthy and sustainably produced dishes, we aim to offer our guests a dining experience that nourishes both body and soul.

To further reduce our environmental footprint, we are pleased to offer an increased range of vegetarian options to our clients. By making plant-based choices readily available at both Hang Bay and Bay Phsar, we contribute to the reduction of emissions associated with animal product consumption. We believe in the power of collective action and strive to provide sustainable alternatives that align with our guests' values.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE BY RECYCLING

Recycling is another crucial aspect of our sustainability strategy. We have implemented recycling programs throughout our properties to prevent the generation of additional waste that would otherwise pollute our environment. In our offices, we reuse paper for double printing or as scrap paper, minimizing unnecessary consumption. On average, we handle approximately 20 kilograms of food waste daily. To tackle this waste, we have established a system for the separation and collection of organic waste from our F&B outlets and staff canteen. Employees can then use this waste to feed their animals, promoting a circular approach to the use of resources.

In our commitment to supporting sustainable causes, Zannier Hotels actively participates in several initiatives. We collaborate with the Trailblazer Cambodia Organization (TCO) and donate our used cooking oil. TCO, in partnership with Greenfire Bioenergy, converts this oil into biodiesel, thus reducing the environmental impact associated with its disposal.

Additionally, we donate used soap to the ECO Soap Bank Organization, which repurposes it into new soap bars that are distributed to Cambodian families in need. On average, we collect around 20 kg of soap per trimester, of course depending on hotel occupancy and guest consumption.

Furthermore, we decided to give a second life to our staff uniforms and linens that are too damaged for hotel use but still usable. This spring, we donated about 50 pieces of our discarded uniforms and they now are reused as cleaning rugs.

We maintain a wide portfolio of carefully selected organic and sustainable local suppliers. These partners not only provide us with high-quality products but also serve as invaluable sources of information and inspiration, guiding us towards improved operational processes. By extending the lifespan of these materials, we contribute to reducing waste and supporting local communities.

OUR LIGHT FROM A GREENER PATH

Nurturing health and the environment energy efficiency is a priority for us, and we are proud to share that our entire resort has transitioned from conventional lighting to LED technology. LED lighting offers numerous environmental advantages, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants. In total, we have installed 2,550 pieces of LED lights throughout our resort. With its energy-efficient properties, absence of toxicity, and a reduced need for light fixtures, LED lighting perfectly aligns with our saving commitments.
