True Blue Bay Boutique Resort in Grenada Achieves Green Globe Platinum Status for 10 Consecutive Years
Green Globe Platinum certification has been awarded to True Blue Bay Boutique Resort, a prestigious recognition awarded for maintaining 10 consecutive years of Green Globe certification. The Platinum certification highlights the resort’s unwavering commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship in Grenada. True Blue Bay Boutique Resort’s sustainability journey serves as a shining example for other hospitality establishments in Grenada and beyond. The resort’s innovative practices and dedication to social and environmental responsibility have firmly positioned it as a leader in eco-tourism.
“We are incredibly honored to receive this Platinum Status recognition,” said Magdalena Fielden, one of the hotel’s owners who was present at the Caribbean Hotel Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF) to receive the award. “Sustainability is at the core of our operations, and this milestone reinforces our commitment to preserving Grenada’s natural beauty for future generations. We are proud to set an example in this space, and to continue offering our guests an eco-conscious and memorable stay.”
True Blue Bay has long been a trailblazer in promoting sustainability practices within the Caribbean hospitality industry. The resort has implemented a robust resource management strategy with a myriad of sustainability initiatives. Energy efficiency remains a priority at the resort and recently a 1600 square foot conference center was built fully powered by solar panels to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. Solar panels on roof tops power key areas of the resort while solar-operated air conditioners installed in rooms, and solar water heaters in rooms and kitchens, take full advantage of the tropical sunlight.
Water conservation remains a key focus with a state-of-the-art rainwater harvesting system and greywater recycling integrated into daily operations. Recycled wastewater is used to irrigate gardens and water-efficient toilets have been installed in bathrooms across the property.
Heading into the future, E-transportation is on the rise with the resort purchasing two electric buses for airport pickups and guest shuttles. Installation of electric vehicle charging stations further contributes to reducing the resort’s environmental footprint.
Eco-friendly practices are maintained at the island resort where saltwater pools are now the norm and chlorine use is banned. In addition, the housekeeping department uses green alternatives instead of harsh and harmful chemicals and biodegradable detergents are used in the laundry and kitchens.
Waste management strategies are being continually developed and refined at the resort. Comprehensive composting and recycling programs ensure minimal waste is sent to landfills. Single-use plastic has been eliminated at the property leading to innovative solutions. Wine bottles are made into water glasses for the restaurant and up-cycled items are used as decorative displays at the property in place of plastic products. In offices, office paper is recycled into note pads or shredded for compost.
Organic waste is also utilized to with optimum results. A Biogas digester uses garden and restaurant waste to produce methane fuel for the bakery stove top and provides fertilizer for gardens. Restaurant vegetable and biodegradable waste is also converted into compost to fertilize the grounds around the property or donated to a local pig farm as feed.
Outside the resort, Green Team members enthusiastically conduct regular beach and roadside cleanups with members of the community to encourage responsible actions and promote cleaner environments. In addition to its environmental efforts, True Blue Bay Resort plays an active role in encouraging inclusivity and social responsibility. The resort partners with local businesses, providing them with a platform to showcase and sell their creations and products. True Blue Bay has partnerships with local cocoa farmers who run farm tours for guests and the resort hosts the Grenada Chocolate Festival each year to highlight delicious high quality chocolate.
The resort also supports community programs that assist disadvantaged youth in Grenada. Initiatives that support local children and provide long term benefits include Pack for a Purpose, the Vencome School Project founded by owner Russ Fielden, the Grenada Community Library and the Queen Elizabeth’s Home for Children which holds its annual Christmas party at the property.
