Regensburg Tourismus GmbH Awarded Green Globe Gold Certification

Regensburg Tourismus GmbH (RTG) has been awarded the internationally recognized, prestigious Gold certification by Green Globe. This special distinction is only awarded to members who meet the criteria of the Green Globe standard for sustainable travel, event management and tourism for five consecutive years. RTG qualified through continuous commitment in the areas of sustainable management, social and economic responsibility, cultural heritage and environmental protection. In the annual independent on-site and desktop audits, RTG has demonstrated a consistently high level of performance over the past five years.

Sabine Thiele, Managing Director of RTG, said, “This award is a great success for us. Since the foundation of our organization in 2005, we have been strongly committed to the sustainable development of tourism in Regensburg. We see the Gold status from Green Globe as an incentive to further intensify our commitment to environmental, social and economic issues. Sustainability is at the heart of our tourism strategy and we currently have an image advantage here. But we are also convinced that doing business will be sustainable in the future.”

Diverse commitment to sustainable tourism
RTG is committed to sustainable tourism in a variety of ways and in recent years has launched numerous projects and initiatives. RTG has been taking small steady steps along a long path in order to move closer to this goal.

At a destination level, this includes TourCert certification that recognizes local businesses and enterprises as a Sustainable Destination and now involves numerous partner businesses. Another important project is the Travel for All certification, which encourages tourism to become more inclusive and barrier-free. In addition, the website www.regensburg-nachhaltig.de (also in English) was launched in collaboration with the city of Regensberg, where businesses with sustainable criteria are featured. These destination initiatives are part of the sustainability offensive for Regensburg tourism launched in 2020, which is integrated into the city's Green Deal program.

In addition, RTG itself has been setting a good example since it was first established. Key measures include the sustainable evaluation of events, conferences and congresses using the independent Green Score Card evaluation and measurement tool. This concept was awarded the ADAC Tourism Prize, Special Prize for Sustainability, in 2019. RTG is also a member of the OHA! business initiative and has calculated its own carbon footprint. In addition, RTG has already been audited twice for the Economy for the Common Good and has produced a sustainability report based on the Economy for the Common Good.

An award with a role model function
Green Globe Gold certification is not awarded automatically, but after a comprehensive review of sustainability performance over five years. It confirms RTG's tireless efforts to promote sustainable tourism in Regensburg and to act as a role model in the travel and tourism industry. With this award, RTG underscores its goal of making Regensburg a credible, sustainable destination for private and business travel - for the benefit of all interest groups in the World Heritage City. Travel and feeling good is thus made possible.
