Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam Aims for Carbon Neutrality by 2040
Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam was recently recertified by Green Globe. The hotel was awarded Gold status in 2022, marking five consecutive years of certification. Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam is a landmark hotel with an architectural history dating back to the 1800s. Modern sustainability practices are carefully balanced with responsible actions that ensure the preservation of this iconic building in The Netherlands.
The Green Globe Standard has been developed over three decades and guarantees the highest level of sustainable operations and management. Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam’s sustainability management plan (SMP) was established with the guidance of sustainability criteria that meet the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Green Team, comprised of the hotel management, is dedicated to its sustainability goals that includes a procurement policy that supports local businesses and farms to stimulate regional development. Eco-friendly measures include water, energy and waste reduction strategies, sustainably sourced food products, the use of green cleaning products and social initiatives that raise environmental awareness and encourage inclusivity.
Energy Saving Initiatives
Energy consumption is just one of the key areas that is monitored regularly with specific targets set each year to minimize environmental impacts. The hotel is very proud of its upcoming $1.2 Million (USD) project where air conditioning equipment in 159 rooms in the urban wing of the hotel will be updated leading to a substantial saving of 25% in energy usage as compared to the previous system. The ventilation system in the gym has also been updated to equipment with increased energy saving capabilities.
September 2024 welcomed in other new changes. The exterior of the grand hotel will be given a fresh coat of paint along the front facade and Damrak side of the building. The building will be gracefully returned to its original cream coloured stone finish as it was first envisaged in1898. LED lighting will be installed and signage on the roof will be upgraded to further reduce energy usage.
New Technology and New Goals
In January this year, the hotel invested $500,000 (USD) to carry out renovations on the back kitchen of the Carstens Brasserie. The aim is to completely eliminate gas usage in the new kitchen. Later this year, the hotel will have a separate ESG budget which will allow expenditure on 0% carbon equipment. Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam’s main goal for the future is to make improvements year after year so that by the year 2040 the hotel will be carbon neutral with a 0% carbon footprint.
To fight food waste, Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam has installed a food waste machine in kitchens that is fitted with an AI scanner. The advanced technology provides data to chefs and management about the different types of food waste and volume of waste. Informed decisions can then be made about menu planning and food purchases that benefit the planet.
Community Initiatives
The Green Team at the hotel have been working on initiatives that foster inclusivity in the community. A new elevator is now available at the entrance of the building providing easier accessibility for people with disabilities. Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam also hosted an event with Oma’s Soup (Oma’s Soep) with the purpose to lessen the feeling of loneliness and isolation in the community. Grandmothers enjoyed an afternoon at the Carstens restaurant where they were served delicious, locally sourced soups and dishes.
