Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse: Impactful Actions for an Environmentally Responsible Future

Green Globe recently recertified Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse. The resort lies on the horizon of Tunisia’s liveliest town, stretched out along a sparkling beachfront. This exquisite getaway offers a perfect holiday experience for eco-conscious travelers.

The resort adheres to a robust sustainability management plan and is dedicated to providing exceptional guest services. In a world where sustainable development has become a top priority, the hospitality industry itself must consider taking a leading role in environmental preservation and the adoption of responsible practices. At Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse, sustainability is not just a vision, it is a core pillar of its overall sustainability strategy. The resort is committed to integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives into daily operations ensuring a greener and more responsible future.

"Hospitality is more than just a profession; it is a commitment to our guests, our teams and our environment. We have a responsibility to preserve natural resources and minimize our ecological footprint while delivering an outstanding guest experience. In 2024, we reached ambitious milestones and we remain steadfast in our mission to drive sustainability forward with the same determination," said Hassen Chaouache, Cluster General Manager, Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse and Mövenpick Gammarth.

Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse has implemented energy and water conservation measures and a zero plastic policy. The resort’s sustainability efforts have delivered significant results despite an increase in room nights and guest numbers in 2024 compared to 2023. Even with a higher guest occupancy, there has been a 10% reduction in gas and water consumption. In addition, a 1.5% decrease in electricity usage was recorded in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Waste management is also a priority for Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse where the property’s approach to sustainability is based on initiatives that are designed to reduce environmental impact. The property has completely eliminated single-use plastics across all guest services. The next step is to expand this initiative across the hotel and collaborate with suppliers to eliminate plastic from the supply chain entirely.

Last year, several major environmental initiatives were introduced that reinforce a commitment to sustainable tourism in the region. During Earth Day celebrations children of employees were invited to participate in a hands-on educational activity. Each child was asked to plant a tree to symbolize their understanding of preserving nature and demonstrate a lasting understanding of the importance of taking steps to build a greener tomorrow. A dedicated space has also been created within the hotel as part of a new botanical garden initiative where aromatic and medicinal plants are grown. This in-house project has been widely appreciated by guests who enthusiastically share their experiences on social media.

Coastal conservation efforts are ongoing to help protect beaches and marine ecosystems. In collaboration with local authorities, the resort participated in the restoration and cleanup of a beach 20 km from the hotel. A key moment of this event was the release of an endangered sea turtle species back into the ocean, a symbolic act that brought together authorities, children, hotel team members and media representatives.

“Our commitment to sustainability is not limited to occasional initiatives—it is embedded in everything we do. Every action we take must drive real, measurable impacts. The hospitality industry demands passion and dedication, yet we are witnessing a growing global disinterest in this profession. It is crucial to inspire the next generation and instill in them a love for hospitality. That is why we have made knowledge sharing a key mission. Our team members frequently engage with universities and NGOs, sharing their expertise and showcasing the richness of this field. We do more than teach skills— we ignite passion for hospitality,” added Hassen Chaouache.

The Green Team at Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse runs various CSR initiatives year round. International Day of Peace celebrations were organized last year in partnership with the National Tourism Office to reflect shared values of solidarity and unity. Furthermore, in line with the hotel’s social responsibility efforts, the resort hosted an exclusive concert with a renowned artist where 100% of proceeds were donated to cancer research. The concert was a resounding success highlighting the property’s commitment to impactful community initiatives.

Through all of these continuous efforts, Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse is establishing itself as a leading force in sustainable tourism, setting a benchmark with concrete, measurable actions for a more environmentally responsible future.
