Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach: Sustainability by the Numbers

Mövenpick Jumeirah Beach Cleaning Day 2022

Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach is situated in the heart of Dubai's seaside district, Jumeirah Beach Residence, on the shores of the Arabian Gulf. The 5-star hotel is only a 30-minute drive from Dubai International Airport and offers modern meeting, conference and banqueting facilities for event planners and corporate clients. First certified in 2011 this luxury property has since earned the prestigious Green Globe GOLD Award.

Amery Burleigh, General Manager Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach says, “During the global lockdowns, people suddenly saw with their own eyes the impact humans have on our environment and are now looking to do business with partners who take measured steps to reduce this impact.

“At Movenpick Jumeirah Beach, we have a long history of sustainable practices that grow each year. This year we are eliminating all Single Use Plastics from the guest experience by the end of 2022. In this way, the guests will see and feel the reduction of their own footprint while traveling and this will encourage more of the same behavior at home,” added General Manager Burleigh.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach has developed expertise in environmental monitoring and management. Independent waste management contractors have been hired to inspect and assess the hotel’s daily waste segregation and advise on best practices. As a result of the hotel team’s efforts, diversion of organics and recyclables from the waste stream has improved. For the first half of 2022 more than 63 metric tons of waste was diverted from landfill.

The hotel’s management of utilities is achieved with daily updates and follow ups on all values related to energy, water and CO2. And most importantly, CO2 calculations are made for Scope1, 2 and 3, which translates to those emissions that are generated by the hotel operations as well additional emissions that are a consequence of activities that occur on-site but attributed to third parties.

All available readings are recorded daily, and an extended group of spreadsheets automatically calculates daily consumption, preset KPIs and monthly Greenhouse Emissions. This system delivers nearly real time monitoring of any abnormal operation of systems and the ability to intervene on time. Also, it offers a realistic measurement of the operational efficiency related to energy and therefore, the ability to manage the energy.

Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach’s energy saving measures include additional presence sensors that control the cooling, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to control part of the hotel’s HVAC system, a heat pump for the pool heating, and software logic to optimize the operation of the HVAC system. Savings have so far reached an annually normalized percentage of around 8% combined savings on electricity and district cooling, while continuous monitoring and reconfiguring aims to increase these achieved energy savings.

Along with the success of their environmental management, Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach is on track to eliminate all plastic packaging from take-away food orders. Trays, lids and other packaging is now made only from recyclable material. This significant change has delivered many environmental benefits as well as improved the hotel’s reputation as a sustainable operator and increased the loyalty of their guests.
