Hotel Boat & Co: Sustainable Waterfront Living in the Heart of Amsterdam

Extensive roof top solar power generation at Hotel Boat & Co.

Hotel Boat & Co is an apartment hotel on the waterfront in Houthaven, Amsterdam, an up-and-coming area full of design, good food and forward-thinking entrepreneurs and close to the historic city centre. Hotspots like the Westerpark and the Jordaan are just a bike-ride away. With sustainability as its foundation, Hotel Boat & Co has recently completed its inaugural Green Globe certification with a high ranking 86% compliance score.

General Manager Elsemiek Giskes says, “We are thrilled that we are a new Green Globe member with our Hotel Boat & Co. We are an Aparthotel situated on the waterfront in the Amsterdam Houthaven, the historic timber harbor district. We have been audited for the first time. We believe it is very important to contribute to a healthy and clean environment, together with our guests. This certification shows that we are on the right course with our sustainability ambitions!”

Hotel Boat & Co has eco-friendliness built into its core according to Cradle-to-Cradle principles, using sustainable construction materials that produce zero waste. The hotel has been recognized with the BREEAM Excellent certification. This award shows the hotel is among the top 10% most sustainable buildings in terms of environmental requirements.

Hotel Boat & Co contributes to zero emissions, with solar panels placed on the roof generating green energy. The hotel also generates energy using a swill tank that collects organic waste that is then converted into compost, biodiesel and biogas. The tank stores a large amount of organic waste, which reduces transport movements, and fewer trips means less CO2 emissions.

To complement the generating of sustainable energy, Hotel Boat & Co focus on energy conservation. Water temperature and temperature in the rooms are controlled via Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES), which means 70% less CO2 emissions. ATES is an innovative method for saving and storing energy in the form of heat or cold in the soil.

The hotel’s Energy Performance Certificate rating, for heating & cooling, ventilation, and hot water, is an extraordinary 0.041 (the lower the number the less energy consumption). This low level of energy usage gives Hotel Boat & Co at ranking of A+++.

Hotel Boat & Co uses as little single-use plastic as possible. When they do use single-use items, they choose the most sustainable products such as iLoveEcoEssentials. These single-use items are made from natural, reusable raw materials, such as FSC-certified bamboo, which can grow 1 meter within 24 hours. The products are also developed according to fair-trade principles.

To be truly and exemplarily Dutch, Hotel Boat & Co promotes bicycling in Amsterdam with with Roetz, a bike manufacturer who uses recycled bicycle frames to produce new bicycles. And if that’s not enough the hotel’s menus are made from residual agricultural material and printed with organic ink by De Bij.
