Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives: Sustainable Beacon in the North Male Atoll
Grand Park Kodhipparu, North Male Atoll, has once again been independently certified by Green Globe for its dedication to sustainable tourism. First certified in 2020, the resort has maintained its excellent 86% compliance score for a 4th year, along with its position as an elite Maldivian vacation experience, putting protection of planet and people at the forefront of its operations.
Underpinning its efforts, Grand Park Kodhipparu’s “Green Team” has the responsibility and skills to ensure effective ongoing environmental and sociocultural sustainability measures are in place and performance monitored. The resort employs a Sustainability Manager who engages guests and staff on the resort’s natural ecosystems and carries out underwater conservation and restoration work of the resort’s coral reef ecosystem.
To verify Grand Park Kodhipparu’s sustainability, the resort has met the stringent compliance indicators and criteria of the Green Globe International Standard for Sustainable Tourism V1.7. This standard is accepted by the travel & tourism industry as the highest level of compliance. To be certified, the Resort has provided documented evidence to demonstrate how it meets the standard, and in addition has engaged an independent auditor to conduct on-site inspections to guarantee compliance.
Raffaele Solferino, General Manager Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives says, “As a Maldives eco-friendly resort, we strive to emulate international best practices in sustainable hospitality and achieve continual improvement in both our ecological and socio-cultural sustainability performance. Currently, Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives, aims to be Sustainability Champion in the future by seeking to be a leader in sustainable and responsible tourism.”
As a one-island-one-resort destination, Grand Park Kodhipparu occupies its own tiny atoll in the vast Indian Ocean. As such, it is the perfect microcosm to explore the greater global challenges of protecting a precious environment while enjoying the many benefits of our modern lifestyles.
On a daily basis, operations at Grand Park Kodhipparu are tuned to constantly minimizing their environmental footprint. The resort has eliminated the use of plastic bottles and utensil and segregates all its waste to recapture recyclables and organics. Energy is drawn from the sun via the resort’s substantial photovoltaic plant, while the its nursery cultivates herbs and flowers used in the kitchens and around the resort.
For more than 5 years Grand Park Kodhipparu has been cultivating coral gardens around its atoll, where coral pieces from the House Reef are attached to purposely built underwater structures. Each year the gardens replenish coral and create new marine environments to support sea life. The coral gardens, along with the pristine reef systems around the atoll are major attractions for visiting divers, with the resort recognizing, and providing training based on, both ISS and PADI diving certificates.
Along with Grand Park Kodhipparu, Green Globe acknowledges the global importance of the Maldives' marine biodiversity and the increasing threats from climate change. The recent sustainability certification of the resort further substantiates the resort’s crucial sustainable practices which preserve the delicate ecosystems of the North Male Atoll.
