Atlantis Submarines Barbados Celebrates Three and A Half Decades with Presidential and Ministerial Guests

Atlantis Submarines was officially launched in Barbados on Feb 15th, 1987. Feb 2022 marks its 35th year in operation and the Atlantis team was delighted to celebrate the occasion with a special dive to host Her Excellency, the Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, President of the Republic of Barbados, Hon Adrian Forde Minister of Environment and National Beautification and specially invited guests.

Her Excellency, and Minister Forde, were greeted and escorted by all the Atlantis team members who lined the dock to welcome them. The special high-level delegation warmly interacted with the employees who will also celebrate 35 years with the company this year. Atlantis Submarines International salutes and says “thank you” for the sterling contribution of the entire team and particularly the five valued persons who formed part of the startup team and continue to shine. Four of them were previous colleagues at Intel Corporation, immediately before the closure of the semiconductor plant in 1986.and who embarked on this novel adventure three and a half decades ago.

Atlantis Submarines Barbados has had Green Globe certification since 2008 continuously and is the first attraction to receive such. The occasion of the 35th anniversary dive and presence of the Minister of Environment and the team from Coastal Zone Management Unit was an opportunity to publicly commit to actualize the focus on sustainability being spoken about and to recommit working with the Ministry of Environment to do so.

Esther Forde, Accounting Manager, Daria Welch, Office Manager, Robert Hinds Submarine Pilot and Operations Manager and Roseanne Myers General Manager, all had an opportunity to share a photo opportunity with the honored guests, for posterity. Mr Anthony Pitt, submarine pilot and Maintenance manager has also achieved 35 years but was not present on this occasion. Thirty eight percent of the Atlantis team have been with the company for over 20 years but thirty percent of new hires, who are in their late teens and early twenties, will now bring a millennial view that will strengthen our recovery and help to prepare for the future.

In her welcome remarks General Manager Roseanne Myers noted, “Atlantis Submarines Barbados is the longest operating Atlantis Submarine site in the world and thus the staff here are some of the longest serving. It is an example of a sustainable tourism product which raises awareness of the importance of the reef ecosystem while thrilling guests in a journey that takes to maximum of one hundred and fifty feet under water among coral and fish, during the day and at night.”

GM Myers went on to say "Atlantis Submarines is headquartered in Vancouver Canada and is the largest operator of leisure submarines in the world. Atlantis Submarines Barbados was established as the second Atlantis site in the Caribbean and ahead of the operations in Aruba, Mexico, and Bahamas, and the four Pacific sites in Hawaii and Guam. The first Atlantis Submarine site in Grand Cayman unfortunately closed due to the pandemic. Atlantis Barbados' longevity is a testament to the dedicated and skilled team here who have stayed and steered the course. The supportive tourism policies in Barbados and the very innovative BEST program have buoyed us through this most difficult negative impact of Covid pandemic. We thank the successive governments for providing a stable environment in which to work, and thank all industry partners, suppliers, tour operators, tour reps and hotel concierge for their high recommendation and tangible support over the years. The year-round rates for Barbadian residents and especially school children have seen home grown support for one of the world's most unique attractions over our 35 years and we are most grateful.”
