Green Globe Certified Abadía Retuerta, the 27th Best Wine Tourism Destination According to the World’s Best Vineyards 2023

The winery Abadía Retuerta, Protected Designation of Origin, is located right at the heart of the Duero Valley near Sardón de Duero (Valladolid). It is now considered the 27th-best winery in the world, according to the 2023 edition of The World’s Best Vineyards, an award ceremony held today in La Rioja. In this fifth edition of the awards, Abadía Retuerta has been ranked two positions higher than last year, and is now regarded as the third-best Spanish destination for wine tourism, from a total of four Spanish wineries included in the top 50 of this renowned international ranking. It is also the first winery from Castilla y León to be recognised by these awards.

The World’s Best Vineyards is an organisation made up of over 600 experts in wine and wine-related tourism, from all over the world. The awards seek to identify and celebrate the greatest vineyards and wineries in terms of their wine tourism. This prestigious international contest announces, every year, their list of the top 100 wineries in the world, i.e. the very best resorts for enjoying wine, where guests can learn how the grapes are cultivated and how the wines are made. The awards also shine a spotlight on the overall experience on offer, such as guided tours of the estates, spectacular accommodation and world-class gastronomy. Following the votes of the jury, Abadía Retuerta has once again been included in their ranking, and is now considered among the thirty best wine tourism destinations in the whole world.

Abadía Retuerta now holds, since last year, its own Protected Designation of Origin. This prestigious seal of approval, recognised by the European Union, endorses Abadía Retuerta’s wine as a product of guaranteed origin, quality and tradition. The accolade is further confirmation of the exceptional soils at Abadía Retuerta, certifying that its wines are an authentic expression of the terroir: the region’s particular climatic and geographical traits imbue the estate’s vineyards and grapes with unique attributes, so the resulting wines are full of genuine local character.

Enrique Valero, CEO of Abadía Retuerta: “We are so proud to be named the 27th-best wine tourism destination in the world, an improvement of two places compared to last year. We are now the third-best Spanish winery on the list, and the first one from Castilla y León. This accolade recognises the tireless work of all our team, who strive to showcase the world of winemaking and ensure that our guests have remarkable experiences. This vision is what motivates us to keep working hard, so that we can truly embody Spanish excellence on the global stage.”

Winemaking tradition and unforgettable experiences
Abadía Retuerta has a deeply-rooted winemaking tradition. Wine has played a key role on the estate ever since the time of the Premonstratensian monks — they used to produce it here, over eight centuries ago. In 1996, renowned winemaker Pascal Delbeck set out to revive that legacy, thus founding the new Abadía Retuerta winery. Ángel Anocíbar is the winery’s current oenologist and director, and he leads the expert team as they endeavour to make wines with all the distinct personality of the local terroir, reflecting its unique character. Within Abadía Retuerta’s 180 hectares of vineyards, there are 54 distinct plots, mainly differentiated due to their soil composition, and each one is planted with a single grape variety. In 2022, the winery was granted its own Protected Designation of Origin: this seal of approval, granted by the European Union, endorses Abadía Retuerta’s wine as a product of guaranteed origin, quality and tradition. It is one of the most innovative wineries in Europe, and its wine has received multiple international accolades, such as being featured in Wine Spectator magazine’s Top 100 Wines in the World.

At this iconic winery, in the Ribera del Duero, guests can learn all about the world of wine. They can enjoy a stroll among the vineyards, explore every nook and cranny of the winery, learn about its history and see all aspects of the winemaking process. They can also discover the barrel rooms, where the wines are aged to acquire their bold, fine and smooth flavours, and guests can take part in guided and personalised wine-tasting sessions. They are also welcome to stay at LeDomaine, the estate’s hotel, where wine plays a central role at the world-class restaurants and at Santuario Wellness & Spa, a shrine to wellbeing.

These are all luxury experiences, in which guests can surrender to the pleasures of wine this summer. The estate has a team dedicated team who seek to come up with unique experiences: they offer myriad possibilities for an unforgettable visit, in which the true essence of Abadía Retuerta Protected Designation of Origin is ready to be discovered.
