Tasigo Stay in Harmony: Towels
We took a closer look at our laundry operations and the towel placed in guest rooms. Realizing these towels were quite big, we decided to reduce their size by almost 15%. You will find below details about this easy-to-implement action, resulting in huge positive impact on the environment and substantial savings.
The original size of our towels was 150 x 90 cm. We decided to cut them down by 20 cm, to 130 x 90 cm size.
These 20 cm pieces were turned into spare bathrobe belts and washcloths.
Old towel weight: 776 grams
New towel weight: 671 grams
One washing machine cycle can handle 55 kg of laundry, equivalent to 70 old towels and 81 new ones (the capacity is actually 60 kg, but we reduced our load volume by 5 kg to gain in efficiency).
In 2019, we washed 167.300 towels using 2.390 machines cycles.
After we reduced the size of the towel by 20 cm, we managed to save 325 machines cycles.
(167.300 / 81 = 2.065 cycles, 2.390-2.065=325)
*Water is composed of cold (79%) and hot (21%)
By reducing the size of our towels by 15%, we reduced our water and energy use for laundry by 12.5%. This practice has enabled us to save a significant amount of energy, water and detergent by reducing the frequency of washing cycles in our hotel. If we consider the consumption of an average family of four in Turkey, these savings are equivalent to: 18 months of electricity, 10 years of detergent, 9 months of water, and 6 years of natural gas.
Total annual savings are 18.779 TL = 1700 euro, 2000 USD
This calculation is not even taking into account the savings related to human resources and other impacts on the environment, such as detergent transportation, wastewater disposal, detergent container disposal, etc. In addition, the washing machines have a longer life due to less use, thus reducing maintenance costs.
The continuity of all ecosystems in the world depends on the availability of sufficient, high-quality water. It is vital that we protect our water before the climate crisis looms larger.
We managed to do it, Why not take a look at your towel sizes?!
