Villa Dubrovnik: Pioneering Sustainable Tourism in Croatia

Set into the rocky cliffs on the most magical stretch of Dalmatian coast, Villa Dubrovnik’s pristine white architecture provides a stunning contrast to the emerald green waters of the Adriatic Sea. The hotel is situated on the eastern edge of Dubrovnik just over a mile from the medieval walls that protect the city’s Old Town and is a short walk to Sveti Jakov Beach, one of the most picturesque bathing spots in the region.

Villa Dubrovnik was first certified by Green Globe in 2019 and has achieved an elite position with a score of 93% of Green Globe compliance indicators. Tourism has become a significant contributor to Croatia’s economy, accounting for 20% GDP in 2019. Visitor numbers have grown to an estimated 11 million tourists per year, delivering good economic contributions and a stronger need for sustainability initiatives by the country’s hospitality businesses.

General Manager Mrs. Mirna Loncar Strazicic says, “Our fundamental value is environmental protection and doing business according to sustainable business standards in tourism. We are proud to be the only Green Globe certified hotel in Croatia, which is the world's leading certificate for sustainable business and management in travel and tourism around the world.

“Our aim is to set the standard for other luxurious properties in Croatia and every year the hotel pushes the boundaries in all business segments, achieving positive results while taking care of the environment and our future,” added Mrs Strazicic.

In 2022, Villa Dubrovnik was grateful to have the opportunity to support and participate in the Caritas project “In Libertas embrace¨ organized by the Dubrovnik Diocese. The project set out to provide a ten-day holiday for two groups of fifty children from war-torn Ukraine. Villa Dubrovnik was extremely proud to be able to contribute, along with other project supporters, in providing memorable holidays for these children.

In addition, Villa Dubrovnik has continued to support Dubrovnik Caritas Red Cross with donations of clothing and shoes, following the previous year’s contribution of hotel mattresses for people in need.

Environmentally, the hotel’s digitalization process was launched and staff at Villa Dubrovnik have converted to paperless digital check-in for guests. The hotel’s web-app is designed to help reach the goal of removing all paper collateral, and printed information booklets will only be issued to guests upon request. All staff participate in the hotel’s tourism training course focusing on Green Globe, the hotel’s goals, and outcomes which can be achieved by changing the perspective of tourism, for local communities and the environment

And finally, just to a mention, the 300 low-water Mediterranean plants introduced in 2021 to the hotel’s rooftop garden and surrounds, continue to thrive.
