HEART College of Hospitality, Jamaica Awarded Green Globe GOLD Certification

HEART College Beach CleanUp 2022

The HEART College of Hospitality Services/Cardiff Hotel and Spa is a hospitality training institution and hotel. Owned and operated by the HEART NSTA Trust, an agency of the Office of the Prime Minister, Cardiff Hotel and Spa consists of 52 rooms with a maximum occupancy of 104 guests while the college offers boarding accommodation to trainees. Nestled on 10 acres of land overlooking the Caribbean Sea at Cardiff Hall in Runaway St Ann, the property boasts a picturesque view of the Caribbean Sea and is beautifully landscaped with a wide variety of plant species.

This natural beauty is a major part of HEART’s understanding and appreciation of the importance of natural resources and the task they are given to preserve it. This task is taken very seriously with continued dedication to maintaining best practices. This dedication and service driven attitude continues to motivate their success in sustainable operations and management, which has seen the college achieve Green Globe GOLD certification status.

By adhering to green principles in its management and operations, the college implements measures that control, reduce or prevent impacts on the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit. Implementation of sound environmental practices also minimizes impacts on natural resources and they continue to operate under the three pillars of sustainability – the integration of environment, economic and social dimensions.

The property takes the utmost pride in the fact that all trainees and employees are aware of the environmentally friendly programmes and are integral in their sustainability. These programmes are centered around the three (3) principles of sustainability which are outlined below:

Environment - Managing our Resources

·      Reducing energy usage through the use of light emitting diode (LED) lighting and energy efficient equipment

·      Sensitization and awareness sessions geared towards operating effectively and efficiently

·      Implementing a farm to table concept by setting up a herb and vegetable garden on property

·      Incorporating waste reduction initiatives within daily operations. This includes the establishment of a composting programme used within the garden to boost productivity and uphold environmentally safe operations.

·      Establishing a plastic bottle recycling cage on property (Partnership with Recycling Partners of Jamaica and Tourism Product Development Company)

·      Use of recyclables - staff and trainees are encouraged to dine in using re-usable dinnerwares and use a recyclable water bottle.

Economy

·      Continue to buy local produce

·      All equipment is energy efficient

·      All materials are selected based on affordability, durability, low maintenance and low environmental impact

·      Deliveries are scheduled on a ‘just in time’ basis where practical, to avoid onsite storage and damage

·      Posting signs and prompts to encourage switching off the lights, fans and air conditioning units when not in use.

Social

·      Adoption of Hoolebury Primary school for mentoring

·      Partnerships forged with varied entities for the facilitation of workshops and sensitization sessions

·      Recognition and participation in themed days such as:

-       National Tree Planting Day activities

-       International Coastal Clean Up activities

-       World Environment Day

-       World AIDS Day

-       Mental Health Month

-       Fire Safety and disaster preparedness days
