Stay in Harmony Policy Produces Outstanding Results at Tasigo Hotels Eskişehi in Turkey

The 5-star Tasigo Eskişehir is located in the quiet, relaxing atmosphere of Bademlik, the most beautiful region of Eskişehir in Turkey and the rising pearl of Anatolia. The hotel is within walking distance of Odunpazarı, a Unesco World Heritage listed district.

Green Globe has awarded Tasigo Hotels Eskişehir its inaugural certification.

Hande Tabanca, General Manager at the hotel said, “We are very proud of achieving our First Certification by Green Globe. All the team have made great efforts in the different areas of sustainability within the hotel to attain this acknowledgement despite difficult challenges posed by the pandemic. We look forward to working together with our partners and community to develop further sustainable initiatives in years to come.”

Melike Karagöbek, Corporate Sustainability Executive details the hotel’s sustainability strategy and innovative approach toward sustainable resource management.

“The Stay in Harmony program was created to achieve our sustainability goals and identify ways to reduce our consumption of resources, mitigating our global impact and reducing CO2e emissions. Some of the sustainability initiatives already implemented at the hotel did not require any investment. We wanted to share these opportunities to reduce resource consumption with other hotels and underscore that great investments are not always necessary in achieving impactful results,” said Ms. Karagöbek.

Trimmer Towels

In 2020, the hotel took a closer look at their laundry operations and realised that guest towels measuring 150 cm x 90 cm were exceptionally large to clean, taking up excessive amounts of water, energy and washing products. Trimming 20cm off the length of towels has resulted in a huge positive impact on the environment and substantial savings. Leftover pieces of terry towelling fabric were upcycled into spare bathrobes and washcloths. In addition, 325 machine washing cycles were saved, reducing water and energy usage by 12.5%. By comparison in 2019, 167,300 towels were laundered using 2,390 machine washing cycles. Total annual savings resulting from this new initiative have been calculated at ₺18,779 Turkish Lira equivalent to €1700 Euro or $2000 USD.

“This practice has enabled us to save a significant amount of energy, water and detergent by reducing the frequency of washing cycles. If we consider the consumption of an average family of four in Turkey, these savings are equivalent to 18 months of electricity, 10 years of detergent, 9 months of water and 6 years of natural gas,” explained Ms. Karagöbek.

The Garden

A farm-to-table approach has been established at the hotel where a small one-acre garden has been set up to offer a more natural experience to guests. During summer, a variety of vegetables and herbs such as green peppers, pumpkin, cucumber, rosemary, thyme and mint are harvested for use in kitchens while in colder months fruits and vegetables are purchased from local organic farms. To complete the circular economic model, composting organic waste is used as fertilizer in the garden to enrich soil for future crops.
