Ozen Reserve Bolifushi Preserving a Delicate Balance

Situated in a pristine lagoon in South Malé Atoll, with expansive white beaches and turquoise waters fringing their lush island, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi is a soulful private resort that extends a local Maldivian welcome.

Ozen Reserve Bolifushi has achieved Green Globe’s prestigious GOLD status for more than 5 consecutive years of independently verified sustainable operations and management. Its green initiatives are extensive and designed to set the highest example of ecological respect for a destination delicately placed in nature.

Waste Heat Recovery
Ozen Reserve Bolifushi does not use geysers (water heaters) to provide hot water for villas, colleague accommodations, and operational requirements. Instead, the resort provides hot water using just the heat from electrical generators, without using any additional equipment or energy. Not using hot water geysers reduces their carbon footprint by approximately 275 tons of CO2 emissions

In-House Water Bottling Plant
Ozen Reserve Bolifushi produces its own water at the resort by using a reverse osmosis process. Drinking quality water is served in attractive reusable glass water bottles. This eliminates the use of plastic bottles, saving about 80,000 bottles every year. And, by not flying-in imported bottled water to the island, they again reduce their carbon emissions.

 Kitchen Garden
As part of its sustainability journey, the resort grows some of their own vegetables, fruits, and herbs. A variety of produce including cucumber, lettuce, rock melon, snake gourd, sugar cane, banana, watermelon, and other plants are grown in the kitchen garden. All fruits and vegetables are grown using sustainable, 100% organic methods and as a bonus generate zero miles from garden to plate.

 Biodegradable Laundry Detergent
On Bolifushi island, the resort opts for safe, green products, such as bio-degradable laundry detergents from the internationally renowned company, Diversey Limited. These biodegradable chemicals break down quickly and safely into harmless compounds by using the action of microorganisms. The laundry chemicals are harmless to nature and are easily soluble in water without disturbing flora and fauna.

 Water Conservation
With the increasing effects of climate change, island resorts across the planet may face severe scarcity of potable water in the future. Ozen Reserve Bolifushi realizes the need to reuse and recycle water to secure supply for future generations, and optimizes its use of fresh water, while practicing water reclamation. The sewage treatment plant efficiently converts all wastewater to highly fertile irrigation water used for gardens around the island. The reclaimed water has a naturally high nutrient content, thus reducing or even eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers. Using treated water to irrigate flora is a sustainable practice that helps to conserve water supply.

Resident Marine Biologist
The resort’s resident marine biologist looks after the rich coral reef at Bolifushi island by planting underwater coral gardens using frames. These artificial structures create a safe environment where bleached corals can regrow and flourish. Apart from running conservation programs, the marine biologist spends a lot of time with guests, leading snorkeling tours for adults and children and sharing insightful facts about local marine life.
