Mercure Hotel Dubai says Yes for a Better Future through Sustainability

Dubai, UAE - Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights has been actively involved in instigating sustainable tourism. Sustainability involves enhancing operational management, consuming less water and energy, and coming up with innovative solutions to problems already in existence by adopting sustainable practices. Mercure Dubai aspires to integrate cutting-edge technologies that are best for our guests, the environment, and our employees while embracing Accor's initiatives that are in line with what they believe in as an organisation.

One of the highlights of the company’s initiatives for sustainability is waste management. Food waste majorly contributes to the company’s cost. The Kitchen Stewarding team, who was striving to control it, has come up with the idea of using crushers for leftover waste and vegetable trimming which has reduced the waste volume tremendously from 7kg to 2kg. This waste has been re-purposed as fertiliser for outdoor plants and trees.

Secondly, Mercure has recently taken part in a significant month-long Sustainability Competition, to show how they can do more than what is expected for a better and more sustainable future. The hotel’s internal departments participated in the competition by showcasing the creativity and innovation used to bring the management’s sustainability vision to life. Using waste and recycled material generated in their departments, they created items with new functions as well as decorative pieces. To cultivate organic herbs like bay leaf, rosemary, thyme, cherry tomatoes, and even maize, the Culinary and Stewarding team created a Chef's Garden out of recycled cans and plastic bottles. Recycling has always been a top priority for the housekeeping department and used linen is upcycled by the laundry team and used as floor mops, laundry bags and pillows; an innovative way to reduce costs. The engineering team's sustainability initiative included both innovative and useful goods, and helped them win the competition. Who would have known that we could come up with an amazing replica of top tourist spots in the city from waste palettes, and from an electrical waste drums we could come up with functional tables and chairs.

Furthermore, Mercure has been conducting regular activities for sustainability headed by our Talent and Culture Manager and, under the leadership of General Manager Levent Tasbas, the yearly calendar is set to engage the Mercure team in promoting sustainability. The hotel team has shown tremendous support for CSR activities such as the blood donation campaign, can/glass/paper collection campaigns organised by EEG, donation of clothes to the Beit Al Khair society, Clean up campaigns by Dubai Municipality, tree planting campaigns by EEG, to name a few. The hotel also participated in Accor’s Planet 21 carbon offset plan by planting 57 trees in the Ourika project in Morocco and also invested in the carbon offset program through Farnek in the CDM project 7260 DEWA chiller station.

With all the initiatives that Mercure Dubai actively and passionately participated in, the team is humbled to receive awards that show their hard work and dedication. They have received the Middle East Cleaning Hygiene & Facilities Award and Green Globe certification. The Mercure Hotel believes in the importance of sustainability and its impact on a greener Earth. They consistently take part in Accor's initiatives for Planet 21 in contributing toward sustainable tourism and a better future.
