L'Heure Bleue: Sustainability Meets Bohemian Luxury on Nosy Be Madagascar

L’ Heure Bleue, Madagascar enjoys unhindered views of Madirokely Beach and Ambatoloaka  Bay and is renowned as an “Ecolochic Hotel”, with just 8 luxury lodges and 10 waterfront bungalows. The hotel is the only resort on the island of Nosy Be to have received certification for its environmental and socio-economic management and has achieved Green Globe GOLD with an exceptional compliance score of 91%.

Reopening the hotel after the recent global shut down has been met with many challenges, however the management and staff remain committed to their sustainable approach to hospitality. Fundamental actions such as daily waste sorting of organics and recyclables remain in place. To protect their special location facing the Indian Ocean, plastic drinking straws have been eliminated and replaced with bamboo straws.

To underpin its self-reliance, L’Heure Bleue, with the assistance of local skills, has also developed its own vegetable garden. These efforts now deliver at least 25% of total ingredients to the hotel’s kitchen and combined with local caught seafood, provide authentic tastes for the hotel guests.

L'Heure Bleue aims to be a model in terms of sustainable tourism for its island of Nosy Be and Madagascar. Since 2012 the hotel has generated solar electricity, which delivers 3,500 kWh into the hotel's network. With more than 300 days of sunshine, the hotel also utilizes monobloc type solar thermal collectors (CESI) to supply of hot water.

Wastewater from the accommodation is collected in sumps and treated using filters made from coconut and dead coral, instead of being discharged into the sea. The treated water is supplied to the gardens. Wastewater from the laundry is also recovered in the same way. The honeycomb towels and sheets were chosen for their low water absorption, and to limit the use of detergents in the laundry.

The reopening of the hotel has also bought greater emphasis to the importance of supporting and being supported by the local community. L'Heure Bleue recruits locally and focuses on individual development and social balance. Staff wages are above local standards, and a solidarity health fund has been set up for employees and their families. This is all in addition to the local charities and other funds supported by the hotel.
