Hotel Sans Souci Wien: European Leader in Sustainable Hospitality
First certified in 2017, Hotel Sans Souci Wien celebrates five years of continuous certification with elevation to Green Globe Gold status. Sans Souci’s dedication to sustainability is reflected in its compliance score of 92%, putting it in the elite class of Green Globe members. This achievement perfectly aligns with Vienna’s claim to being one of Europe’s greenest destinations with almost a third of its energy coming from renewables and half the city area dedicated to green space.
Hotel Sans Souci Wien General Manager, Vesna Prokic says, “At Sans Souci Wien we pay attention to sustainability in our daily actions, strategic decisions and visionary plans for the future. I am very proud that this important topic enjoys such a high priority in our company and that we are continuously developing into an even more sustainable hotel."
Sans Souci Wien is located in the Bohemian quarter of Spittelberg, between the Imperial 1st and Artistic 7th District of Vienna. The historical building which today houses Hotel Sans Souci Wien, was erected in 1872 and except for post WWII occupation, has operated as a hotel from most of its 150 years.
Today, Sans Souci Wien is a luxury boutique hotel offering sixty-five rooms and suites along with a collection of modern art including original paintings by Roy Lichtenstein, Allen Jones and Steve Kaufman. Beyond the hotel’s lobby, art and culture are on offer throughout Vienna’s Museums Quartier, one of the world’s greatest artistic precincts.
The Sans Souci Group’s careful renovation and ongoing preservation of their historic hotel is testament to a core belief in sustainability. Throughout the hotel’s management, great efforts are made to deliver the lightest environmental footprint. Four years ago, Sans Souci´s whole reservation went digital and ceased paper-printing of all correspondence. Reduce and reuse is also a core value with staff giving resources a second chance of life through recycling.
The kitchen team pays utmost attention to high quality produce and partners with the best farmers in the surrounds of Vienna. These strong partnerships allow Sans Souci to serve regionally produced and deliciously fresh food. Suppliers are experts in their respective fields and – just like the hotel’s kitchen team – love to experiment. Be it with the cultivation of exotic produce including lemons or aquaculture of prawns or rediscovering forgotten plant breeds. The dishes served at restaurant Veranda are a modern interpretation of traditional Austrian cuisine.
The weekly menu for Sans Souci employees has recently received a sustainability-make-over. Each week the hotel serves two organic meat dishes plus one organic fish dish. This means that four vegetarian meals per week end up on staff plates, which is not only good for the health of the Sans Souci team but once again a benefit to the environment.
Continuing with its support for all things local, Sans Souci actively works against fast-fashion and supports manufacturing businesses in its region. The hotel uniforms for the whole team are sewn by an Austrian company in Styria, with the fabric sourced from and produced by Austrian and German companies.
