Hotel Kaiserhof Wien: Over a Decade of Independently Certified Sustainable Management

When Hotel Kaiserhof Wien was built in 1896 on the former Glacis grounds, it was considered one of the most modern hotels of its era. Innovations such as a guest elevator, central heating, electricity and running water in all rooms were indeed luxurious sensations for the time.

This pursuit of innovation, which began over a century ago, has carried into the modern day with Hotel Kaiserhof Wien leading the way in sustainable hotel operations in Vienna. General Manager Gilbert Kratschmann says, “In 2012, Hotel Kaiserhof was the first hotel in Vienna, Austria to be Green Globe certified. For more than 10 years now, we as a company have been committed to sustainability in our daily actions."

For its decade of continuous, independently verified certification, Hotel Kaiserhof Wien has attained Green Globe’s prestigious GOLD status. Over the years of building conversions and adaptations, Hotel Kaiserhof has taken a variety of measures that focus on sustainability and environmental protection. To counteract the shortage and wasteful use of resources, water throttles were installed, as were sensors attached to the windows, which automatically interrupt the air conditioning or heating as soon as they are opened. Where appropriate, energy-saving lamps and motion sensors are used throughout the hotel. In all areas of the hotel, the use of paper is largely avoided. Reservations, reception, and administration have been working online for years. If a printout cannot be prevented, only recycled paper is available throughout the hotel.

Alongside Hotel Kaiserhof’s in-house measures to conserve resources, guests are invited to actively participate in the Guests Live Sustainability program. Guests who stay more than 2 nights at the hotel have the option to dispense with the room cleaning as well as the changing of towels and linen. As a thank you, guests receive a voucher for the hotel bar and at the same time save on the consumption of water, energy and cleaning products.

The number of guests using Guests Live Sustainability has been steadily increasing and the hotel is in the process of introducing a special Green - Room Rate.

While it has been reducing the excessive use of cleaning products, the hotel also ensures that all chemicals are based on ecological raw materials and have been certified several times, including the Austrian Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel. An annual evaluation of the cleaning products ensures that the most environmentally friendly are available.

Vienna is well known as a city of culture and Hotel Kaiserhof’s reception team is pleased to be able to connect guest with certified Viennese tourist guides. Just a few steps from Hotel Kaiserhof, guests can reach the classic sights along the Ringstrasse including, The Secession, the Opera, the Musikverein and the vibrant Naschmarkt with trendy pubs and bars. The luxury shopping districts around Graben, Kohlmarkt and Kärntnerstrasse are also within easy walking distance.

Vienna has many attractive green recreation areas and nature reserves. The Wienerwald is a biosphere park recognized by UNESCO (www.bpww.at). The Lobau is part of the Donauauen National Park (www.donauauen.at), which can also be easily reached by bike.

Vienna has a very well-developed network of public transport. One of Vienna's most important subway hubs, Karlsplatz, connects the hotel with the whole city. Upon arrival, hotel guests receive a city map with the necessary information. Rental bikes are available and bike maps are also provided at reception. Electric taxis can be booked for transfers, and Vienna Airport is easily accessible by public transport using the CAT (City Airport Train), the Airport Bus or the rapid transit.
