Constance Moofushi Maldives: Fighting Plastic Pollution in the Indian Ocean

Constance Moofushi Resort is located on the South Ari Atoll of the Maldives. The Atoll is widely regarded as one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in the world and neatly situated on the migration route of manta rays.

Constance Moofushi’s unique setting, in a pristine environment, is enhanced by many cultural and economic interactions with island neighbors. To maintain its unique community and unspoiled marine-scape, the resort incorporates environmental leadership into everything they do and adopts best practices while complying with Maldivian and international regulatory requirements.

Constance Moofushi commenced its sustainability performance program in 2013 to strengthen its commitment to community and nature as well as the prosperity of their eco-luxury resort. The resort holds Green Globe Gold Certification for its outstanding achievements.

Sustainability Ambassador Aprilyn B. Tiamzon is the resort’s Environmental Health and Safety Executive and believes that Constance Moofushi exemplifies their motto, “True by Nature.” Aprilyn says, “Being green is more than just buying ‘eco’. It is an unshakable commitment to a sustainable lifestyle. We are not above nature, we are a part of nature.”

In 2017, Constance Moofushi started a partnership with Reefscapers to create a coral restoration project. Effective restoration promotes the recovery of the surrounding coral reef. The coral adoption program allows the resort to share with guests the importance of the marine ecosystem. During their stay, guests can adopt a coral frame and help the marine biologist to build it and grow coral.

Constance Moofushi believes individual efforts can greatly contribute towards advancing sustainable development goals. To further raise environmental awareness, the Bag Me Up initiative encourages all guests to collect all the micro plastics they may see on the beaches and take them home to help in its recycling program.

Microplastics are pieces of plastics that measures less than 5 millimeters long. They are invisible water pollutants that pose a serious threat to marine and freshwater organisms, as well as to humans. Recent studies show that the Maldives has the highest percentage of microplastics pollution in their oceans. Bag Me Up bags are placed on guests’ beds upon arrival and are also available at the boathouse.

Regular Local Beach Clean-Ups help remove plastic pollution from the marine ecosystem and protect local wildlife. Constance Moofushi works with local communities and schools to get involved and to raise awareness. The resort has found that the Local Beach Clean-Ups are not only a fantastic way to contribute to saving the environment, but they are an easy way to get people from all walks of life involved in reducing plastic pollution and protecting marine life. It is beneficial, not only to marine life, but also to all humans, to remove as much plastic as possible from the ocean while we still can.

And to further reinforce its promise to remove plastic from waste streams and the ocean, this year Constance Moofushi introduced wooden key cards that are environmental-friendly, biodegradable and quickly degrade in landfill.
