Messe Erfurt receives international “Green Globe” seal of sustainability

(Erfurt, 5 August 2014) – Messe Erfurt GmbH has been recognised with its first international “Green Globe” sustainability certificate. The company met the 300 or so assessment criteria at the first attempt, with an exceptional 93 per cent. Dr Peter Zimmer, Green Globe Auditor for Germany, Austria and Eastern and Southern Europe, presented the coveted certificate to Messe Erfurt Managing Director Wieland Kniffka on 5 August 2014.

Wieland Kniffka notes: “Sustainability, or the practice of ecological, economical and socially responsible business, is a solid pillar of our corporate philosophy. Green Globe certification spurs us on to work with exhibitors, visitors and customers to bring new life to the vision of a green conference and trade fair centre in Erfurt.”

The Managing Director points further to the enormous commercial significance of “green” business. In a world operating with increasing environmental consciousness, he believes that sooner or later the survival of a trade fair company will hinge on sustainability.

Already, some 85 per cent of German conference organisers confirm a growing level of interest in green, sustainable conference centres according to a study by the industry association German Convention Bureau (GCB). The GCB’s Meeting and EventBarometer 2013 shows that almost half of all event organisers give preference to providers with a certified sustainability management system.

Erfurt’s central location and ease of access are turning it into an increasingly popular centre for conferences and conventions. This trend will grow even stronger with the opening of the new Inter City Express (ICE) rail hub in 2017. Consequently, the areas of action that are important for establishing the company as a green conference and trade fair centre are energy and buildings; mobility; quality and safety; purchasing and catering; social affairs and health.

Messe Erfurt’s long-standing involvement in regional environmental projects such as the Thuringia Sustainability Agreement (Nachhaltigkeitsabkommen Thüringen, NAT) and Ökoprofit and its active support for “rightandfair”, the sustainability code of the German language event industry, bring the added assurance that resource efficiency is a key factor in the hosting of trade fairs, conferences, concerts and events – not least because all electricity used is 100% green energy.

Aiming for green
On average, two thirds of the total CO2 emissions for hosting an event come purely from journeys by participants/visitors to and from the event (source: atmosfair). Messe Erfurt’s primary objective is CO2-free journeys to the Messe for all customers. Discounted travel using 100% green energy is available to holders of event tickets, and combined trade fair and local transport tickets include free use of city rail and bus services. These services are provided in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn and Erfurt Transport Services (EVAG). Alternative mobility solutions such as car sharing and bicycle hire services are constantly under review. EVAG tickets for the Erfurt area are available to Messe Erfurt employees travelling on business.

In July 2014, Messe Erfurt launched a new service to exhibitors and visitors: the first electric vehicle charging station on the trade fair grounds.

Convening conscientiously
Messe Erfurt is establishing itself as a climate-neutral event location with climate-neutral events! A key factor in this respect is maximising CO2 reduction. Once CO2 emissions are at a level where further reductions are not possible or are difficult to achieve, offsetting is an effective measure. Event organisers and exhibitors also have the ability to offset their carbon emissions. Calculation and offset payments for Messe Erfurt’s event-related CO2 emissions are arranged by its service partner “atmosfair”, based in Berlin. In this way customers who attach importance to the environmentally friendly nature of their event can obtain relevant advice, book Green Meeting packages and, using the CO2 events calculator, calculate and pay the offset for their event’s carbon footprint.
