Green Globe member, the Bentota Beach Hotel in Bentota, Sri Lanka, took home the Five Crowns for Food Hygiene award at a ceremony recently held in Kingsbury, Colombo. Presenting this prestigious award at the ceremony was Senior Minister for Food Security Mr. M.P. Dayaratne. The accolade is a result of extensive assessments carried out by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) in partnership with IND-EXPO certification Ltd., a joint venture of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries and the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) established this scheme in order to strengthen international certification capability in Sri Lanka with regards to food safety standards. The project is funded by the Royal Norwegian Government (NORAD), in association with the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries and National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE), as well as the Ministry of Industrial Development.

The main objective of the Crowns for Food Hygiene scheme is to encourage food catering establishments to practice safer food hygiene, therefore providing safer food to their patrons. The Crowns’ scheme criteria for assessment covers the commitment of a business towards the maintenance of food safety management systems, environment, infrastructure, food preparation procedures, storage, display, cleanliness, personal hygiene, use of clean water and effective use of raw materials.

“It is of paramount importance to us that we keep up the image of our brand, and always thrive to deliver the best in terms of our product and service offerings. Winning five crowns for food hygiene is a simple example of us standing out as true hospitality trendsetters,” said Sanjeeva Perera, General Manager at the Bentota Beach Hotel.

Bentota Beach Hotel boasts of winning Five Crowns and portrays itself as maintaining the highest standards, not only when offering excellent accommodation in a stunning location, but also the best quality and hygiene standards.
