Sofitel The Palm Dubai: Focus on Environment and Community
April 25, 2018 Bradley Cox

Sofitel The Palm Dubai is committed to supporting environmental initiatives and many community programs. Rohit Salunke, Director of Engineering, details the various best practices currently in place at the resort.

To minimize its environmental impact and reduce its carbon footprint, Sofitel The Palm Dubai adheres to a comprehensive waste management policy where every effort is made to limit, segregate, sort, collect and properly dispose of all waste. Cutting-edge technology, The Winnow System, has been installed in the buffet restaurant. This system operates through smart meter technology attached to food waste bins that quickly and easily records the exact amount of food that is thrown away. This has had a major impact on reducing food wastage and led to significant savings in overall costs.

An efficient recycling program has also been implemented diverting almost 20% of waste from landfill. Recycling bins are provided across the property and to date 368 tons of paper and cardboard, 99 tons of plastic, 70 Tons of glass, 3 tons of aluminium cans and 43,260 liters of used oil have been recycled. To further minimize the amount of waste generated the property’s purchasing policy requires all suppliers and vendors to limit quantities of materials and packaging used to only those necessary.

In line with its CSR initiatives, the resort has a dedicated Green Team consisting of department heads and Ambassadors who meet monthly to discuss the implementation of various green initiatives. All Ambassadors undergo induction training and training on sustainability actions carried out at the property. In the local community, resort team members and guests participate in regular events including UAE Clean Up Day, blood donation drives and tree planting activities as well as annual environmental movements such as Earth Hour and Global Earth Day beach cleaning. Further abroad, recycled soaps are distributed to households in Cambodia. Recipients include maternal health programs, schools, community health providers and nutrition programs.
