Following the Eighth Annual Conference of Environmental Tourism in Portugal, the Regional Delegation of the Economists (Delegacao Regional da Madeira Ordem dos Economistas) in Madeira, was awarded the prestigious Green Globe certification – an achievement that will set the pace for future meetings and events in Portugal.

“At Delegacao Regional da Madeira (DRM), corporate responsibility is a top priority,” said Eduardo Jesus, President of the Association. “Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that the DRM is in compliance with 87% of the indicators required for Green Globe certification. We are very proud about the international recognition. It is our goal to continuously improve our efforts, raising the profile of sustainability, and making a positive impact on the community.”

Delegacao Regional belongs to Portugal’s largest hotel group, Grupo Pestana, which impresses with a well-defined sustainability policy throughout its chain of hotels and venues. Sustainable actions have been implemented at all levels of the business, and best practices include an energy management system to reduce and control energy consumption, use of eco-certified cleaning products and recycled materials, and regular staff training sessions in procedures on green events.

DRM aims to identify itself with many CSR projects, considered to really make a difference, and the association is a main stakeholder of the Eco Compatible Life Project under the ‘EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020’. Proposed by the Natural Park Service of Madeira, the project began in October 2010. The main objective is to promote and enhance the compatibility between the socio-economic and cultural activities, such as fishing, agriculture, nature tourism and conservation, the management of nature reserves, hazardous areas, habitats and species listed in the annexes of the directives, which support Natura 2000.

“This project is part of the communication and information strategy of the financial instrument of the European Community LIFE and for the European ecological network Natura 2000,” added Eduardo Jesus. “We are working on communicating sustainability, biodiversity, and human benefit in Natura 2000 sites in the Madeira archipelago. The LIFE program is the European Union’s funding instrument for the environment.”
