Puy du Fou Grand Parc an Outstanding Sustainable Success
September 5, 2013 Arton Kabashi

Opened in 1989, Puy du Fou Grand Parc celebrates its 25th anniversary with its first year of Green Globe Certification. Puy du Fou is a theme park like no other, attracting 1.6 million visitors in 2012, and winning two successive industry accolades: the silver medal in the Applause Award in Orlando, Florida; as well as the Thea Classic Award in Los Angeles for the world’s best park.

Puy du Fou’s far-reaching attention to detail and authenticity make it truly unique. Set within a natural haven of greenery, Puy du Fou’s environmental surroundings makes it perfectly suited to evaluate and perfect sustainable development strategies to maintain ecological quality.

Puy du Fou spokesperson, Laurent Martin said, “Since Green Globe certification in 2012, Puy du Fou has continued its efforts to improve performance in terms of sustainable development. The realization of a specific carbon footprint, as well as reduction by 15% of waste, 5% less consumption of water and increase by 3% the number of local suppliers to the shops of the Grand Parc, are actions that symbolize the hard work by our teams at Puy du Fou.

“As the Green Globe Certification report states, ‘the park demonstrates a beautiful progression with sustainable procurement and efforts to promote a sustainable development approach which includes workers and visitors through effective communications’,” added Mr Martin.

Aside from its villages and hundred-year-old forest, the park’s green haven, offers 20 kilometres of footpaths. At Puy du Fou, nature was not created artificially and as a result, the park is a natural destination set right in the heart of the countryside. 35 gardeners and landscape designers work all year round to protect, prune and maintain the 130 species of trees, the 5,000 varieties of plants, the 5,000 rose bushes of 95 different varieties and the 20 species of aromatic and medicinal plants.

Special signs provide visitors with information about rare species, wild plants and medicinal plants and about the different sorts of vegetables growing in the kitchen gardens in the 18th Century Village and the Medieval City. Puy du Fou gardeners have also developed ecosystems based on the natural food chain as a real alternative to chemical insecticides.

Since its inception, Puy du Fou has supported humanitarian and environmental protection initiatives in France and abroad. For the past 5 years, Puy du Fou has supported the AKAMASOA association by financing the construction of dozens of houses for poor families in Madagascar, and sending containers of food supplies and equipment. Puy du Fou Espérance has already donated almost 3 million euros to humanitarian charities since the Grand Parc was created.
