The Occidental Tucancún is a magnificent holiday hotel located on an idyllic Caribbean beach with white sand and crystalline water, just a few miles from the lively city of Cancun.
Green Globe recently recertified the Occidental Tucancún in Mexico.
Lifesavers Assist Sea Turtles
The destruction of their natural habitats, fishing and nest predation has endangered sea turtles. In order to preserve the species, the property’s lifeguards are responsible for the most important activity in Occidental Tucancún, the care of the eggs of sea turtles that are spawned on the beach. This year in 2019, 40 nests were monitored that contained 4,563 eggs from which a total of 3,590 turtles were released.
Protecting Marine Species
Millions of plastic microparticles as well as other garbage are ingested by fish and other marine animals causing injuries or even death. To combat this mammoth problem, trash cans are located in the beach area of the property where guests can easily deposit waste. In addition, a large cylinder in the shape of a cigarette is in place for collection of discarded butts.
Hotel employees have committed to playing a key part in taking care of their beach as waste continues to reach the shoreline through the air and also carried by incoming tidal waters. Members from each hotel department participate in environmental campaigns throughout the year to prevent marine species from being affected by the pollution. Every Saturday, staff members are divided into teams to clean different sections of the beach where various micro plastics, bottles, cigarette butts and other debris have accumulated.
