Green Globe has awarded OBLU by Atmosphere at Helengeli in the Maldives its inaugural certification in acknowledgement of its commitment to sustainable management and practices.
The vibrant, trendy four-star superior resort is located on Helengeli Island in the North Male’ Atoll renowned for its exotic house reef with its resident silver-tipped sharks, lobsters and giant sea turtles. The restaurants and 116 villas at the property blend seamlessly into the tropical surroundings and landscape. Guests feel an instant connection in this paradise setting and can simply step into nature when entering the main restaurant with its sand floor.
OBLU by Atmosphere at Helengeli has created its own Green Book that is displayed at the reception area. Sections include information regarding the history and culture of the Maldives, encouraging responsible behaviour amongst staff and guests regarding energy and water usage and waste reduction, and promoting local ethically made souvenirs. Future plans will see information disseminated on tablets placed in all guest rooms. This will allow the resort to communicate their sustainability initiatives with guests more effectively.
Approximately 40% of employees have undertaken environmental and sustainability training recently. This figure is expected to double over time with a focus on practical training in implementing sustainable procedures at the resort as well as raising awareness regarding sustainability efforts amongst staff members and within neighbouring communities.
To support regional economic activity, a local market is organised each Friday in the centre of the property where Maldivian arts and crafts created by local artists and local food are displayed for sale. There is a reproduction of an old Maldivian house and the staff in attendance at the market wear the Maldivian traditional sarong. Island excursions are also organised by the resort which is a unique way for visitors to experience local life and customs and support local businesses by purchasing souvenirs directly from them.
