Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket in Thailand was recently re-certified by Green Globe for the fourth year in a row. The resort achieved a notable compliance score of 86% against accredited criteria in acknowledgement of its commitment to sustainable best practices.

“The resort is committed to promoting sustainability and our commitment is reflected in our management principles and daily practices. It is our goal to reduce negative environmental impacts at all levels and to encourage our partners, guests and staff to do the same,” said Nick Porter, General Manager at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket.

Key achievements have been made in lowering carbon emissions, environmental protection and though the development of community actions.

Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket has replaced its regular fleet of diesel tuk-tuks (auto-rickshaws) with electric vehicles in a move to reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by vehicles driven at the resort. New electric golf carts are used to transport guests around the resort and electric tuk-tuks are used to deliver food and equipment to different areas at the property. In addition, limousines have now been replaced with newer hybrid cars resulting in a considerably lower carbon footprint during airport transfers.

A new environmental initiative, an Eco Trail project, will be launched in the future. Staff at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket plan to team up with the Chief of National Parks in Phuket to provide a protected environment for endangered plants and trees within the resort’s gardens. Several signs will be placed along garden paths to educate guests and visitors about the various native species of flora creating one of the first in-resort “edutainment” activities in Phuket.

In line with the property’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities, a Community Support Fund has been established. The resort invites guests to contribute to the fund to support various activities that are organized for underprivileged children and the elderly. The contribution is an opt-out program that costs guests USD 1 per stay. There has been a very positive response from guests to this charitable cause.

Furthermore, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach works closely with local community groups in Phuket to ensure a better life for those in need. The resort team organizes various activities throughout the year to help disadvantaged people including orphans. Food and clothing are donated and valuable skills such as English classes are also provided to build brighter futures.
