Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Phuket Beach: Turning Fresh Air into Drinking Water

Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Phuket Beach has one of the highest compliance scores for sustainability in their region and is part of the elite Green Globe Gold membership.

General Manager Michael Wenk said, “For the past 6 years we have been continuously reinforcing our dedication towards environmental conservation, as we believe we have the accountability to support and protect our community and our environment. We are actively introducing innovative technological measures to help reduce our eco-footprint and preserve our fragile ecosystem.”

In October 2017, Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Phuket Beach implemented Generation Water which is a machine that produces water from the air, then purifies and enhances this water through a process inspired by the natural water cycle. This is done by condensing the water vapour (humidity) naturally found in the air, circulating it through an advanced filtration process to keep the water as fresh as possible. Minerals are then added to the water in a similar way to the process that occurs in nature when water flows through rocks, picking up minerals along the way. Within 3 month the resort has managed to save 804 plastic bottles, and for 2018 intends to save over 3,000 plastic bottles. Installation of Generation Water is now planned for all guest rooms.

During the last year, Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Phuket Beach’s Green Team Committee participated in several beach cleaning activities in Phuket and joined the Upcycling the Oceans campaign in Phuket. The resort’s Green Team is continuously committed to supporting the cleanliness of the environment, and the beaches are a top priority ensuring that they remain natural. On average all team members combined, collect over 200kg of waste per beach.

Movenpick Resort Bangtao Phuket Beach uses sustainable business practices, which have not only an ecological and societal impact, but also provide economic benefits. In Phuket, it is the norm that food items received in hotels are delivered in plastic bags by the suppliers. To reduce the use of plastic, the resort purchased crates which were given to all vendors to ensure the food being delivered is no longer brought in bags. Having introduced this best practice, other hotels and restaurants within the area have now adopted the system of multi-use crates.
