The 5-star Mövenpick Hotel Izmir is located in the heart of the city overlooking the gorgeous bay of the Aegean Sea and close to Cumhuriyet Square that features an historic equestrian statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Green Globe recertified Mövenpick Hotel Izmir in February with the property receiving an outstanding score of 98%.
Merih Yumlu, PR and Quality Manager of Mövenpick Hotel Izmir said, “ Some people view climate change as a global problem but it isn’t their fault that it’s occurring. Climate change is real but it is not unsolvable. There are many things we can do to make a big impact with a little effort such as driving less or biking more, conserving water at home by taking shorter showers and using eco friendly or natural soaps. We should eat seasonally and locally, and avoid single use plastics and paper products. We can do an energy audit at home and change light bulbs to LEDs, and switch lights off when leaving a room. These are the simplest and easiest changes everybody can make. Our planet needs us, so let’s take the first step towards a low carbon future.”
Sustainable best practices at Mövenpick Hotel Izmir focus on reducing its environmental footprint and making a positive contribution to the community. The hotel’s comprehensive Sustainability Management Plan and Sustainability Brochure are available on the website and on an internal information channel to educate guests and staff about its green goals.
Green Meetings are offered at the hotel to conference guests with eco-friendly options including low energy lights, eco-certified pens and paper (if requested), water and fruit juice dispensers and dry fruit served in place of candies. To reduce waste, leftover cookies can be donated to charity and segregated bins placed in meeting rooms. Free parking for eco-friendly cars is also provided.
Environmental initiatives that benefit the wider community remain a priority and one particular project helps preserve native forest areas. In cooperation with the Aegean Forest Foundation, volunteer staff members have planted 1000 new young saplings within the Mövenpick Hotel Izmir Grove. Planting activities started over nine years ago as part of the hotel’s sustainability program and soon became a sincere mission. Since then, 8000 young trees had been donated to the project that continues to this day.
Mövenpick Hotel Izmir recently joined the Turkish government’s Zero Waste Project. With a population of over 80 million people, waste generation remains a daunting problem in Turkey. For over a year, the government has been making great efforts to introduce environmentally friendly measures including new recycling campaigns that target paper, plastic, glass, metal and clothing products. The project aims to repurpose reusable rubbish and put it to further use. All companies, industries and members of the public are encouraged to play a part in this national green initiative.
