“We are honored to be re-certified and recognized by Green Globe as a leading Belize Eco-Resort,” said Cathy Alchin, General Manager at Xanadu Island Resort, situated on the beach in San Pedro, Ambergris, Belize. “Our efforts to preserve and uplift Ambergris Caye and the community of San Pedro are at the core of what makes Xanadu Island Resort a favorite among eco-conscious travelers.”
For years, Xanadu Island Resort has demonstrated a firm commitment to sustainable operations and environmental awareness. Construction of this eco-resort began in the summer of 1998. These days, owners Judy and Ivan Sheinbaum are highly excited about the achievement of their paradise.
“Through our many initiatives and upgrades we have reduced our impact on the environment to Green Globe’s highest standards,” commented Judy Sheinbaum. “We signed on to Green Globe to ensure that we are utilizing best practices globally, and setting benchmarks for continual environmental improvements year after year.”
The entire resort is equipped with energy efficient lighting and energy management control systems, and guests are encouraged to conserve energy during their stay. Some of Xanadu Island’s best practices include solar water heaters, a strict reuse and recycle policy, the use of eco-friendly mosquito eradication, reducing landfill by composting organic waste to nurture the property’s herb and vegetable gardens, and the resort’s fresh water swimming pool is salt chlorinated.
Xanadu Island Resort works closely with The American Crocodile Education Sanctuary (ACES) – dedicated to the conservation of Belize’s critical wetland habitats and protected species, specifically crocodilians, through scientific research and education to preserve wildlife for future generations. As rare as polar bears, American crocodiles (crocodylus acutus) are found only in the Americas; Belize is their last stronghold. Donations enable croc experts, biologists, and volunteers to rescue crocodiles that are ill, injured, problematic, or being illegally held in captivity in often inhumane conditions. Rescued crocodiles are medically treated and rehabilitated for release when able.
About Xanadu Island Resort
Xanadu Island Resort is an eco-friendly Belize beach resort, with a touch of luxury. The accommodations of Xanadu feature some of the most unique structures on the island. The resort’s buildings literally are monolithic (one-piece) domes – fireproof, soundproof, hurricane-proof, and steel-reinforced concrete structures. Inside, the dome’s curves give each luxury condominium suite an architectural uniqueness, that can’t be found anywhere else. Outside, a thatched roof and wooden deck create an authentic, natural Belizean appearance. All 20 luxury suites offer fully equipped kitchens, living/dining areas, and a choice of studio, loft, 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms.
