The InterContinental Budapest is situated on the banks of the Danube River and offers stylish, modern guest rooms with views of the Royal Palace and the picturesque Budapest cityscape. This world-class hotel neighbors two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Hungary’s iconic Chain Bridge and the Danube Promenade. The InterContinental Budapest is Green Globe’s exclusive member hotel in Hungary and has been recently certified for a second year.

The InterContinental Budapest works with Green Engage, IHG’s own global sustainable program to devise green strategies that encompass the hotel’s overall management and operations. The IHG Green Engage online system measures energy, waste and water use. This has resulted in an average increase of 25% more energy efficiency for hotels in the InterContinental Hotel Group.

The InterContinental Budapest follows comprehensive strategies to conserve water. Water-saving technologies and processes are in place including the installation of low-flow fixtures on taps and showerheads in guest rooms and kitchens. Typically, a total of 40% of water is used per day for showering, cooking and cleaning etc., but the hotel group hopes by 2017 to reduce this to 12% per occupied room in water stressed areas. In accordance with IHG’s policies the property has seen a 4.2% reduction in water use per occupied room in water-stressed areas from a 2012 baseline.

Environmental sustainability targets for the five year period 2013-2017 has been set as per IHG Green Engage strategies at a 12% reduction in its carbon footprint per occupied room. According to IHG’s 2014 Responsible Business Report, to date there has been a 3% reduction in its carbon footprint per occupied room from a 2012 baseline across all properties.

Green Solutions have been implemented to reduce the impact energy, waste and water use have on the environment. And the hotel is committed to finding innovative solutions through improving management practices and updating technological standards rather than by purchasing carbon offsets. This will ultimately lead to more cost-effective practices as well as improve the value of services offered to guests.

The InterContinenal Budapest endeavours to create sustainable local economic opportunities. Green Meetings can be planned with meeting guidelines that include sustainable catering and eco-friendly presentation and stationery options. In addition, the hotel’s restaurants and kitchens reduce food wastage through sourcing seasonal, locally grown produce and food donation programs are implemented where possible.
