Tourism has become one of the main engines for Mexico’s economy and, as a result, the country has received a record number of domestic and foreign tourists in 2017. According to the Tourism Secretary’s reports, 22.9 million foreign tourists visited Mexico between January and July of this year, which represents 2 million 469 thousand more than in 2016. Meanwhile, there were 34.1 million domestic tourists during the same time.
As we celebrate World Tourism Day, it is important to remember that 2017 has been named the Year of the Sustainable Tourism. We must continue implementing our best practices, in order to reduce the impact generated by tourism services and mitigate its climate change effects. The latter must be done through sustainable actions in the use of the resources and the reduction of contaminating factors.
IBEROSTAR recognizes the importance of this subject. Ever since the first IBEROSTAR hotel opened in Mexico in 1997, in Riviera Maya, the hotel chain has been committed to sustainability initiatives. From that year on, several actions have been implemented in that respect, such as the sea turtle conservation program, the beach clean-up journeys, the “Piensa verde” initiative. Through these actions, sustainability standards are implemented in the hotels’ daily operations, reforestation, optimization of energy and the reuse of waste water and solid materials.
IBEROSTAR has joined and collaborates with the different development goals established by the UN. Among them, development and economic growth, energy and resource optimization, actions in favor of climate, flora, fauna and ecosystems, as well as responsible production and consumption.
