“We are very proud to receive the Green Globe certification for our commitment towards sustainability,” said Emmy Stoel, General Manager at the Hotel Okura Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. “We firmly believe cooperation is a key element in the realization of a better world. For us, corporate social responsibility means to achieve balance between the three P’s: People, Profit, and our Planet.”
Hotel Okura Amsterdam takes responsibility for the impact it has on the environment and society in general, and has implemented initiatives to reduce that impact to a minimum. Aggressive goals have been set to reduce energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste sent to landfills. In order to monitor and manage emissions of greenhouse gases a CO2 assessment was commissioned. Sustainable materials can be found throughout the property, and a responsible purchasing policy is part of the business strategy.
Awareness is created among guests, staff members, and suppliers alike. “We want to inspire everybody, and help us and contribute working towards a better world,” added Emmy Stoel.
Furthering its commitment to solving society’s problems, Hotel Okura Amsterdam is involved with a number of local and national organizations. The property is a member of ‘Natuurmonumenten’, dedicated to improve the quality of life in the Netherlands, by preserving nature, landscape and cultural history. By adopting areas of natural interest, this organization helps to protect native animals and plants and enable people to enjoy the countryside by providing footpaths, cycle paths, observation points and excursions.
In 2013, the hotel launched the Okura – Emma at Work Award, with the aim of encouraging companies to create job opportunities for young adults with chronic illnesses. A few weeks ago, in February, the event was organized for the second time and attended by more than 100 employers, interested in providing jobs for this group of ambitious youngsters.
The Okura Amsterdam organizes a range of activities for the community, such as bingo evenings for the nearby elderly care facility, or repair days at the local petting zoo. The hotel supports the Emma Kinderziekenhuis children’s hospital with annual donations, and the hotel chefs make regular visits to the hospital to host gourmet meal evenings with the children.
Okura Hotels & Resorts is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, representing more than 450 luxury hotels, resorts, and spas worldwide. The Hotel Okura Amsterdam is one of only two members of this elite group in the Netherlands.
