One of Green Globe’s Elite Members, the Bentota Beach Hotel in Bentota, Sri Lanka, has demonstrated a strong commitment to the seamless integration of sound environmental practices into all levels of the business for many years. This property stands out as an eco-friendly and ethical operation, and recently earned Green Globe re-certification.

The Bentota Beach Hotel (BBH) is immersed with the local community, and responsibility activities are numerous. In line with their company pledge “I Will Care” – and observing World Children’s Day – the BBH team recently hosted an event for local children in support of a green school project. “We were fortunate to recognize and appreciate a group of students at Sri Dharmarama Vidyalaya, Yathramulla primary school in Bentota,” said Sanjeeva Perera, General Manager at the Bentota Beach Hotel. “These students had taken efforts to create an herbal garden by their school. With the guidance of the principal and the assistance of their teachers, they joined hands with much enthusiasm for this green initiative.”

Many of these children live underprivileged, and their available resources are limited. However, at school they learn how to utilize their resources in a meaningful manner. One of the school projects focused on using their own garden waste to nurture the plants, and even during school holidays the students have to come to school for watering their plants.

In consultation with the Divisional Grama Niladari and the school principal, BBH General Manager Mr. Sanjeeva Perera, invited all the school children to the hotel to recognize their efforts to preserve nature and their environment. During the ceremony held at the hotel, the school principle, teachers, and the students were highly commended for their project. Certificates were presented to encourage future similar projects.

“We also took this opportunity to educate the children and their teachers on our ongoing green initiatives at the hotel. It is our goal to enhance awareness, and highlight the importance of implementing environmental protection into everybody’s daily routine to collectively preserve our natural resources and protect the planet,” added Mr. Sanjeeva Perera.

The educational event concluded with refreshments served on “Pontoon”, while cruising down the Bentota River, which most of the children had never experienced before.
