Green Globe announces certification of the Gordian Terrace House, located on the island of Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Gordian Terrace was one of the four properties selected to be part of the BVI Tourist Board’s Sustainable Tourism Environmental Program (STEP), launched in November 2011. The BVI Tourist Board under the leadership of the Government of the Virgin Islands has taken proactive measures to preserve the beauty and the habitat of the BVI and help the Territory become the premier destination for sustainable tourism in the Caribbean.
“We are delighted to be the first property on Virgin Gorda to be Green Globe certified,” said Lauralee Maynard, Marketing Manager at the Gordian Terrace. “Being part of STEP and working with Green Globe enabled us to be a more efficient company, and also provided the tools needed to educate our staff on sustainable practices. We are strongly committed to our important role of protecting our environment, for our guests and residents of the British Virgin Islands.”
A long-term sustainability management system is implemented at the Gordian Terrace House to improve the organization, execution and evaluation of their efforts. Awareness is promoted among guests, suppliers, and contractors through a comprehensive communication strategy, as well as local environmental and community-related activities. Gordian Terrace partners with Green VI (www.greenvi.org), a local non-profit organization, working for a greener, cleaner and healthier BVI – ‘We Are All In This Together’ is the motto here.
“We are elated as more and more properties see the significance of preserving and protecting the environment,” commented Natasha Chalwell, Policy and Product Development Manager with the BVI Tourist Board. “The long-term goal is to stimulate economic growth throughout the Territory, while maintaining each unique aspect of ‘Nature’s Little Secrets’ in efforts to facilitate the needs of future generations.”
BVI’s Premier Dr. Orlando Smith will be co-hosting the upcoming Leadership Summit for the Caribbean Challenge Initiative in May (May 17 – 18). Supported by Sir Richard Branson and the Nature Conservatory, this conference will bring together environment ministers, heads of government and CEO’s from around the region to evaluate and set the course for the management and preservation of the region’s marine and coastal environment. The Caribbean Challenge Initiative was launched in 2008.
