Our Green Globe Business Development Manager, Irina Ignat, is currently trekking around the world meeting members and investigating what’s new in sustainable travel and tourism.
First stop was Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, visiting our auditors at Ecoservices. Each month Ecoservices collects more than 50 tons of recyclable materials, including plastic bottles, cardboard, metal cans, glass, used oils and other waste.
“This company, by itself, has almost built the entire recycling capacity for the island nation, “says Irina, adding “They are also involved in social issues assisting local residents with employment and job training. We are fortunate to have such a multi-faceted organization as part of our network”
Working her way through Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Irina reports that the boom in Chinese outbound tourism is reaching these exotic destinations, observing that Green Globe members are having to work hard to help these new travellers understand the basics of sustainable tourism. “Apparently many Chinese travellers fail to appreciate the need to conserve water and also be mindful of disposing of their rubbish. This challenge is however an opportunity for our members to share their knowledge on responsible travel habits,” says Irina.
This week Irina is meeting up with new and current Green Globe members at ITB Asia in Singapore. “Both ITB Asia and sister event ITB Berlin are two of the most important events for us,” notes Irina, also saying, “I see here in Singapore, the ITB organisers have added a responsible tourism session to the agenda and are making a lot of positive noise about sourcing regional cuisine to satisfy the huge crowds of delegates. These are things that only a few years ago would not have been mentioned or discussed”
After ITB Asia, and a short trip to visit Green Globe’s Thai-based membership, Irina will be heading to London to finish her sales mission at the World Travel Market (WTM). Her goal will be to introduce Green Globe’s new online certification system, which will greatly enhance the management of all aspects of sustainability certification.
