German National Monument practices Sustainability

Mövenpick Hotel Essen, Germany, cements a firm commitment to sustainability with its second Green Globe certification. This 4-star hotel counts among the top performing businesses worldwide, and has demonstrated exceptional efforts and innovation in the fields of operational efficiency and corporate responsibility over the past few years.

Human Resources Manager Verena Bredol, who is responsible for coordinating all sustainability activities at the property, commented, „We are very proud about our achievements, and to earn a top score of 97%. The traditional Mövenpick Hotel Essen is situated in the historical building „Handelshof“, in the city center of Essen, the heart of the Ruhr region. Built in the years 1911 – 1912, the hotel opened in 1913 and was managed by the parents of Heinz Ruehman, Germany’s famous actor. Mövenpick Hotel Essen is a national monument.

Sustainability is lived in numerous ways at the Mövenpick Hotel Essen – environmentally-friendly actions are at the heart of all operations. 100% green electricity is provided by local ‘Hannover AG’, and the entire property is equipped with energy-saving electrical devices. Recent investments in sustainable solutions include the installation of a new air-conditioning system and protective films for all windows (saves up to 30% energy). The hotel consciously recycles and separates waste. Carbon offset certificates are bought for all business related travel of the hotel’s employees. Biodegradable cleaning products are being used, and guests are provided with a green line of shampoos and soaps in their rooms.

As part of their CSR program, the Mövenpick Hotel Essen works closely with a number of community partners and charitable organizations, such as ‘Room 58’ – dedicated to the care of the homeless, and people in need. They receive food and comfort, especially during the cold winter times. Many hours are dedicated to various volunteer activities, including regular shoreline clean-ups at the Ruhr River, conducted in conjunction with ‘Aktion Saubere Ruhrufer’. These events bring together different local initiatives, who volunteer in cleaning the river banks of the Ruhr, removing harmful trash and debris.
