“Green Meetings are a key trend in the event sector – they demonstrate awareness and responsibility,” said Lars Woehler, Managing Director at the Congress Center Darmstadt (darmstadtium) in Germany. “At the darmstadtium we are taking it a step further, as our green philosophy is anchored at the core of our business strategy.”

A top-performing Green Globe member for years, the darmstadtium is the first congress center in Germany to receive the silver certificate by the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) for their unique sustainability concept. This state-of-the-art venue showcases sustainability at its best.

With an extensive use of geothermal and solar energy, as well as biomass and green electricity generated from renewable sources, the darmstadtium prides an extremely small carbon footprint. The onsite biomass boiler, which is fueled by locally-sourced woodchips, is a key part for the venue’s energy supply. The roof is fitted with over 400 solar modules, and each module in the photovoltaic unit generates 70,000 kilowatt hours per year! All facades are equipped with special heat-reflecting glass to keep temperatures cool during the summer months.

“Environmental responsibility and user acceptance was our main criteria throughout all phases of the construction and design of the building,“ added Lars Woehler. „From manufacture and transportation to durability and recycling, we chose materials, such as bamboo for the flooring, based on energy efficiency and a sustainable character.”

The darmstadtium is a member with Atmosfair, a climate protection organization with a focus on travel. Atmosfair actively protects the environment by compensating greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energies. A CO2 calculator is provided for every event to keep the impact at an absolute minimum. Atmosfair compensates CO2 emissions by supporting UN certified climate protection projects in developing countries.

Visitors get to benefit from discounted round-trip tickets on German national railway Deutsche Bahn, public transport services within the city of Darmstadt are provided in cooperation with Heag Mobilo. In addition, the darmstadtium features a charging station for electric cars and bikes, and e-bikes are available for rent.
