Green Globe recently awarded Gold status to Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel Bali in recognition of five years of certification.

The Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel Bali’s Green Team, comprised of managers and staff from each department, meets monthly to discuss and implement sustainability initiatives. Various CSR projects encompassing environmental, cultural and social activities have been the main focus over the past year.
Promotion of Balinese Culture
Within this sprawling serene tropical setting lie two traditional Balinese temples. The hotel financially supports the renovation of one of the temples and donations are made each year toward ceremonies. To preserve Balinese culture, team members care for the village temple by cleaning and maintaining the building, participating in ceremonies and providing donations to the temple caretakers. In addition, Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel donates gifts of food during the temple’s various celebratory events. Guests have the opportunity to learn about Balinese culture by visiting the temple where they are informed of the appropriate etiquette to be undertaken when entering this sacred space.
The majority of staff members are locally employed residents and their creative talents as Balinese dancers, singers and Gamelan players are happily on show during performances for guests at cocktail party events and at the Balinese themed dinner on Saturday nights. A free space within the hotel has also been set aside where local craftspeople can showcase their traditional Balinese sculptures and woven products.
Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel is actively involved in CSR initiatives that improve the livelihoods of people in the wider community. Children from local schools are treated to free eye and dental checks. In addition, the property supports the local community by organizing and running a sembako murah (Cheap Kiosk). Furthermore, the hotel works in partnership with the Balinese Hotel Association to provide a scholarship for one fortunate youngster to train in hospitality.
Resource management strategies for 2019 include a 5% energy reduction target. A new heat pump system that lowers energy usage to heat water is one of the new technologies deployed to meet this goal. Water is partly sourced from three onsite wells and recaptured rainwater is used to fill the pond and fulfil gardening needs. Treated water recovered from an onsite STP is also used for garden irrigation.
Waste generation is monitored monthly with a reduction target set at 5%. Waste management is a priority and a new programme to eliminate plastics has been introduced with a specific target set at 10%. To support environmental conservation, team members participate in regular beach clean ups which in turn contributes toward the property’s no plastic campaign.
