The Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo is the first property in Sri Lanka to achieve Green Globe re-certification for the fourth consecutive year. This luxury hotel is renowned for leading by example, and continuously operates on a green platform – embracing the John Keells leisure sector pledge ‘I Will Be Green’.
Sustainability initiatives include a wide range of activities to save energy and water resources, reduce operational costs, and positively contribute to the local communities and environment. “Last year, we could reduce our carbon footprint by 35%, electricity consumption by 37%, water consumption by 40%, and food waste by as much as 61%,” said Denis Gruhier, General Manager at the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo. “We constantly introduce new green practices – spearheaded by our Green Team – to meet the high expectations of green leisure and business travelers.”
Corporate Social Responsibility has played a fundamental role in building the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, the highest valued hospitality brand in Sri Lanka. True to its motto ‘I Will Care’, the hotel launched a series of cultural restoration projects, beginning with the historical Abhayagiriya Temple, followed by St. Anne’s Church Paradise in Kuruwita. 80 hotel associates, along with General Manager, Denis Gruhier, conducted a complete restoration of the church, which included installing a new front door, new gutters, and refitting the washroom with brand new fixtures. Both, the interior and the exterior of the church were painted, and a cinnamon plantation cultivated by the church was cleaned up.
For the third project, more than 100 volunteers signed up within two hours of asking. The team contributed by cleaning and tidying the rubble at the four-story Ayeshwariya Lakshimi Amman Kovil, one of the famous Lakshimi temples in North Kerala. Embracing all four major ethnic groups prevalent in the country, future plans to continue the cultural CSR series include assisting a Muslim Madarasa.
The Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo maintains a close relationship with the local community, stepping in when its assistance is required. The hotel continuously supports schools in the area, such as T.B. Jaya Maha Vidyalaya. In March this year, hotel staff donated over 1000 school note books to needy children in rural towns like Bibila and Madatugama. A Poson Dansala was hosted near the Gangaramaya Temple, preparing and donating 5000 dinner packages for the cause. This initiative caters for an ever increasing number of patrons, and has become a regular annual event.
