Green Globe Elite Member, Sri Lanka’s largest five star city hotel Cinnamon Grand Colombo, celebrated Earth Hour 2014 with a unique initiative by paying a musical tribute to Earth Hour. The tribute highlighted the need to champion causes that strive to save the planet, and the power that individuals have to make a difference.
The video clip titled “Be an Earth Champion” was conceptualized by the hotel’s sustainability and green teams to create awareness, whilst pledging support to making Earth Hour go beyond an hour and a day. Cinnamon Grand’s music video was inspired by the internationally acclaimed hit, “Hall Of Fame” by The Scripts.
Tharika Goonathilake, Manager Marketing Communications & Sustainability, wrote the lyrics for the hotel’s piece of music, which is performed by talented trio Shehan Wanigasekara (Sales & Marketing), Rushani Jayakody (Marketing Communications & Sustainability) and Shehan Mendis (Marketing Communications & Sustainability). The clip is available on the hotel’s YouTube Channel http://goo.gl/2FHz6X.

The hotel’s team believes that the awareness created through the clip will encourage the entire crew of 1200 staff members, guests and the communities in which the property operates to rethink “what they can do to make that difference”.
The music clip also features the hotel’s own green champions, who have contributed to reducing Cinnamon Grand’s carbon footprint through novel initiatives and projects in the areas of water and electricity savings, landfill waste and food waste reduction, recycling and awareness creation.
In addition to the creative initiative for the cause of the planet, Cinnamon Grand joined the worldwide Earth Hour Celebrations by switching off all lights at the hotel’s 501 rooms, 14 restaurants, gardens, fish ponds and swimming pools from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on March 29.
Guests and restaurant patrons at the hotel’s 14 dining outlets marked their commitment to Earth Hour 2014 by turning off lights in their rooms and participating in the ceremonies held at the hotel’s lobby and Nuga Gama, Cinnamon Grand’s Village in the City.
The hotel’s engineering team created this year’s Earth Hour signage slogan ‘Earth 60+’ with a solar power based construction.
“We wanted to spark an interest for solar energy among our guests who joined us for the event, in line with this year’s theme of using renewable energy sources. The signage using 30 watt bulbs for a one hour period was constructed as a result of this,” said Chief Engineer Panduka Wijewardene.
Despite its location in a concrete jungle, the Cinnamon Grand’s village in the city Nuga Gama is partially powered through solar. The hotel has also set an ambitious goal of becoming the most sustainable city hotel by 2015, with a 10% annual carbon footprint reduction target.
