Green Globe’s Elite Member, the Maya Ubud Resort & Spa in Bali recently earned re-certification for their outstanding sustainable operations and management. The certification cemented this luxury resort’s commitment to continually refine the level of understanding of sustainability, and periodically take time to implement improvements wherever possible.
Maya Ubud Resort & Spa aims to create and maintain the sector benchmark for environmentally responsible style and personal luxury, together with inspired service that exceeds guest expectations, with innovative management initiatives and a dedicated staff who take ownership to create the ultimate atmosphere for relaxation, refreshment and rejuvenation of their guests.
According to Maya Ubud Resort & Spa’s General Manager, Paul Blake, “Our management team and all our employees are firmly committed to our sustainable management program, to ensure the longevity of our business and together, preserve and enhance the beautiful of our surroundings”.
Maya Ubud’s Environmental Officer, Romy Anggara commented, “To be awarded Green Globe certification, the resort integrated a wide range of green practices into the daily operation, such as reusing linens, waste reduction and recycling, increasing energy efficiency, environmental education and community outreach. Over the course of two years, sufficient data has been compiled to demonstrate our consistent and ongoing commitment to green initiatives, from the recycling of paper, waste water for irrigation, and even to establishing a spice and herb garden for use by the culinary department. Sustainable efforts were overseen by the Maya Ubud Green Team, which educates all departments on environmental practices”.
Maya Ubud Resort & Spa promotes and supports local Balinese culture, and is immersed in a number of activities and foundations that give back to the community and environment. Guests are invited to join local social awareness programs offered by the resort, such as the Tree Planting Program, which was introduced in November 2007. A small fee of $20 offset the cost of purchasing a tree or shrub of choice, with the balance being donated to Friends of National Park Foundation (FNPF). The program was a tremendous success, and within a period of three years over three hectares land in the river valley was planted with an additional 140 Bali originated trees and shrubs. Guests were genuinely happy to not only contribute to the beautification of the resort, but become involved in the environmental protection of Bali.
