An 18th century palace was the inspiration behind the InterContinental Madrid, a landmark hotel built in 1953. Located in the upscale area of Paseo de la Castellana the hotel is situated close to the Prado Museum, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Real Madrid Museum and the elegant Serrano shopping district. It features 302 guest rooms including 33 Suites and 16 meeting rooms. Guests can dine on the beautiful outdoor terrace at El Jardín Restaurant or enjoy the exclusive services of Club InterContinental.

Green Globe congratulates InterContinental Madrid on its first certification in acknowledgement of its commitment to sustainable best practices. The hotel has attained an outstanding compliance score of 90% against accredited criteria.

Manrique Rodríguez, General Manager at the InterContinental Madrid said, “We are very pleased to have been certified by Green Globe. Hence, we have achieved a perfect balance – keeping the history, art and architecture of the mid-twentieth century along with the quality, comfort and sustainability of the twenty-first century.“

The InterContinental Madrid works with Green Engage, IHG’s own global sustainable program to devise green strategies that encompass the hotel’s overall management and operations. The IHG Green Engage online system measures energy, waste and water use. Energy saving strategies at the property include the installation of fluorescent lighting in back of house offices while 80% of lighting in public areas are LED. Outside lighting of the hotel façade is timer controlled and adjusted in accordance with the seasons. Also, fan-coils in engine rooms feature a new high-efficiency motor.

The hotel complies with local environmental laws, standards and regulations regarding sustainable water management. Furthermore, it supports the utilization of new technology to meet resource saving targets. In 2013, ice machines that are condensed by air instead of water were introduced which has resulted in a significant reduction in water usage.

Guests are encouraged to actively participate in environmental initiatives such as the reuse of linen and towels. Information is disseminated through green cards placed in guest rooms and also included on the hotel’s website. In addition, guests are educated on catching public transport to minimize fossil fuel usage thereby reducing the property’s carbon footprint.

To support the regional economy, 70% of the hotel’s suppliers are located in Madrid and its kitchens prefer locally sourced produce. The InterContinental Madrid also participates in community projects such as the European STEEP project (organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Madrid) that aims to advance environmental standards. And, the hotel sponsored the registration of staff members in the Women Against Cancer Race.
