The InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort in Bavaria, one of Germany’s first mountain resorts, is equally committed to maintaining operational sustainability and supporting the local Berchtesgaden community.
Michael Caspar, General Manager, InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort said, “I am very excited about InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort being certified again by Green Globe, especially as green engagement and corporate social responsibility are some of IHG’s utmost concerns.”
The InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort, as part of the IHG hotel and resort chain, has implemented an advanced online system designed by IHG’s Green Engage that monitors energy, water and waste usage and provides recommendations on reducing the property’s carbon footprint. The resort encourages staff, guests and suppliers to assist them in their efforts to reduce overall energy consumption. To conserve electricity master switches are installed that turn off all power sources simultaneously and motion detectors or timed switches automatically cut off electricity on selected equipment. In addition, eco-friendly LED light bulbs are used and a centrally controlled ventilation system has been installed.
Protecting the surrounding woodlands and mountain peaks are important considerations in the resort’s environmental management plan. Sustainable strategies to reduce water consumption include water saving devices fitted in bathrooms and toilets, and regular maintenance of plumbing. Also, to reduce water pollution biodegradable detergents and cleaning agents are preferred. Waste prevention is minimized with the purchase of a waste compactor and the separation of waste materials for recycling is promoted. Furthermore, event management staff utilize digital schedules in place of itineraries printed on paper and disposable tableware is not used at functions.
Social involvement with the community is a priority at the InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort to honour the traditions and heritage of the Bavarian Alps. The resort donates to primary schools in the Berchtesgaden area and in return it receives crafts made by schoolchildren that are exhibited throughout the property during the Christmas period. The resort also supports a local asthma centre and holds regular exhibitions by artists to showcase their work to the public. In addition, space at the resort is provided for evacuation drills conducted by local volunteer fire-fighters.
“Besides a continuous reduction of water and power consumption since the hotel’s opening in 2005 we are very active in supporting the Berchtesgadener Land region. The proceeds of our charity auction, for example, which is held yearly after our traditional InterContinental Golf Cup Obersalzberg, are donated to alternating local charities – or nature protection projects each year. Thus, we hope to make a little contribution to this fabulous and breathtaking region surrounding us,” added Mr Caspar.
