Sugar Ridge Hotel is located on the southwestern part of Antigua in the West Indies elevated on a natural hillside ablaze with an abundance of colorful indigenous flora and sugar cane. Sugar Ridge commands panoramic views of Antigua’s dramatically forested coastal highlands with many of Antigua’s most beautiful beaches on its doorstep that are easily accessed by the hotel’s complimentary shuttle service.
On the horizon are the nearby islands of Montserrat, Redonda, Nevis and St. Kitts. This area is also Antigua’s most fertile region with black pineapple farms and mango trees all in close proximity.
Green Globe congratulates Sugar Ridge Hotel on its recent re-certification marking three years of sustainable best practice.
The hotel has 60 guest-rooms grouped in blocks of four units, all tiered on the hillside with sweeping views of the ocean beaches and spectacular sunsets. Each unit is directly accessed from garden walkways. Ground floor rooms have large verandahs and a plunge pool while upper-floor rooms have a large verandah and a day bed. All rooms are designed and furnished in a contemporary colonial style with muslin-draped four-poster beds. And bathrooms feature single vanities and double showers.
As part of its Green initiatives the hotel embarked three years ago on several waste-reduction projects. In addition, recycling programs facilitate the collection of all plastic bottles/containers and aluminum cans that are sent to a local recycling plant. During 2014 over 600lb of recyclable materials were collected. To further cut Sugar Ridge’s carbon footprint guests are encouraged to re-use towels and linen. Furthermore, waste-oil from the kitchen is converted to bio-diesel oil by a local company.
Ava Mason, the hotel’s Green Team Leader continues to develop, guide and oversee activities and initiatives geared towards the property’s sustainability, while giving back to the community. In accordance with the hotel’s social and corporate responsibilities a monthly art show is hosted by Sugar Ridge to promote the work of local artists and encourage regional economic development.
In June of each year in celebration of World Environmental Day and Oceans Day and as part of its corporate responsibility, the hotel organises a beach clean up of nearby coastline. Participants include hotel team members as well as local residents from surrounding communities. In addition, the hotel sponsors a team in the National Coastal Clean-up program held annually in September.
