Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort Making Tracks in Environmental Protection

Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort is a hilltop jungle retreat, covering 160 acres of bamboo forest, rice paddies and indigenous gardens. The resort overlooks the hills of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos as well as the Ruak and Mekong Rivers. This luxurious retreat is a natural haven not only for discerning travellers but also for the elephants living within the resort grounds.

Anantara Golden Triangle has been certified by Green Globe for the third year running. The resort ensures that sustainable tourism operations are maintained by integrating social and ecological responsibility into core business operations.

Christian Zunk, General Manager of Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort said, “We’re so proud to receive Green Globe re-Certification. It means a lot to the entire team at Anantara Golden Triangle to be recognized for our consistent efforts towards helping the local environment and communities, and ensuring we maintain sustainable practices.”

The resort is committed to protecting the environment and preserving local culture through education, innovation and empowerment in accordance with the Green Globe Standard. Anantara’s Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (AGTAEF) is an internationally recognised welfare and conservation program and one of the resort’s most sustainable achievements.

Set up in 2003 as a traditional mahout village, the Elephant Camp works alongside AGTAEF to rescue and help elephants that are injured or in danger of abuse. The Elephant Camp also provides ongoing employment and a comfortable lifestyle for the elephants and mahouts (elephant owners) as well as supports projects that help all Thailand’s elephants. These projects include ethical scientific research that is non-injurious to the animals. Fully self sufficient, the Camp now supports more than 25 elephants and 60 people. All elephants receive the utmost care, while the mahout and their families receive food, housing, medical insurance, schooling for their children, and 100% of the profits from a traditional silk weaving business.

Protection of the surrounding fragile eco-system is another ongoing priority for Anantara Golden Triangle. To minimize the resort’s impact on the natural environment all energy and water consumption is monitored on a regular basis. And in line with Anantara Group requirements, an annual 10% energy saving target has been set. Water saving measures are also in place with the installation of dual flush toilets as well as water conservation initiatives that are keenly followed by staff and guests alike. In addition, waste reduction and recycling initiatives are in operation throughout the resort. And eco-friendly products and recyclable packaging are preferred in an effort to reduce overall carbon emissions.

Anantara Golden Triangle is actively engaged in the community as part of its social and corporate responsibility. Programs include forest regeneration, educating guests on endangered rainforest species, donating linen or towels and other out of use items such as amenities to neighbouring communities and charities plus supporting local schools.
